We are taking delivery of an Abbey Spectrum 535 this year and wonder if the Mercedes E300 TDI Auto will be OK

The Abbey Spectrum 535 has an MTPLM of 1696kg and the kerbweight of the Merc somewhere around that figure, too, so you should be aware that you'll be towing at about 100%. I wouldn't say don't but you'll need to extra care. The maximum permissible towload of nearly all E-Class Mercs is 1900kg so at least you will be legal.
