Mercedes electrics

I have just had a towball and electrics fitted (by a reputable company)to my 2005 Mercedes E Class Estate. When I brake the van sidelights come on as well as the brake lights. The supplier says that happens with Mercedes E class and owners put up with it. I cannot believe this, does anyone have any knowledge of this?

Hi David,

One thing to check is if your brake lights come on with the side lights as well, this would indicate a short between the circuits, left and right side lights are fed seperately, do they all come on or just one side? A common place to short would be stop tail bulbs and a circuit can be back fed from another, more likely is a poorly wired plug on your car, my 2004 M class has no problems and I can't see why an E class should be any different.

I also have a Mercedes E Class estate 2003 when the electrics were done on my car i was told a box of electric gubbins had to be obtained from mercedes . But as spj says there could be an earth problem with bulbs .If any one can help try the National Trailer&Towing association on 01926 335445 good luck.

Thank you spj and Roger. Lights on both sides of the van come on. I know it is not the van as the dealer put his test box on the car and saw the same effect. I'll try the Trailer Assn as suggested, and maybe my Merc dealer. Many thanks David
