Martin ,

when I changed from a motorhome to the caravan last year I was talking to the dealer about my options for a towcar.

At the time they were the ML and Disco3. He said the Disco3 was better than the ML (personal choice maybe) but he did also recommend that if I went for the ML to try and get one with the sports suspension or larger alloys and this helped the handling

He was sort of right , I didn't (mine had 17inch alloys) and as I posted earlier the ride was very bouncy.

In contrast my Freelander 2 has the larger 19inch alloys and it does seem a better ride (OK not like for like but I've had 2 Freebie 1s , one had 17in the other 19in and the ride was different and they were identical cars)

Others may well counter this but the implied reason for larger alloys is that the tyre side walls are shorter and therefore offer less flex when put under sideways forces , thus a surer ride , dont know but worth considering.

Finally dont be swayed by reliability comments , believe me all cars breakdown and you'd be surprised how some can be BIG breakdowns. Yes early Landrovers appear to have reliability issues but I work in the recovery industry and ALL brands are the same even the so called reliable Japanese and Korean offerings and the German brands are appaling to be frank.

Knowing what I do , if reliability was a deciding factor I'd buy a push bike or walk.

I'm on my 3rd Landrover , my friend is also about to go into his 3rd and colleagues at work also are staunch LR owners for years and not one has had any breakdowns.

The Merc is a good car and if it pushes your buttons then go for it

Hi Roger

Are you talking about the old or new shape ML?

The old one you could compare with the disco series 2,ladder chassis, the new one you can compare with the Disco 3 ,but this is a moncoque chassis and handles like a car,as good as an X5 and thats the 4x4 benchmark.

Mikey is dead right.

Sales of cars will not plummet.

There is massive affordability still left in the system. People pay

Hi Beej,

The bike issue is one of the reasons we are thinking of a change. At present we have a 3 cycle carrier that goes on the back of the Mondeo. The 4th bike goes in the van.

Both are kids have had new bikes over the winter and whilst they are not adult size they are not far off. The back of the Mondeo sits very low with the bikes on the carrier and the van attached hence my thinking of going for a mor robust car. Also I rekon we are towing at between 90 and 95% of kerbweight depending on load which is not ideal.

Martin.

I have to agree with the other Clive and David.Look to Korea or Japan. Hyundai and Kia really seem to have got it right. Just check out "uksorento.com" . 1700 members can't be wrong. The Santa Fe is also a very well specd vehicle.

Cheers

Alan

I'm now at year 7 with a merc ML 270 cdi auto after 10 years with Discovery tdi manual. No contest. The overall running costs for the ML are way below the Discovery, particularly if you count in the cost of the mobilife european recovery and the engine and autobox are far far superior. OK so the handling is a bit soft (remember this car was designed for the USA market, so the power steering is over powered and without much feed back, but the engine hums rather than grunts, and the autobox enusers roundabouts are no problem rather than a rapid down the box and back up again - very tedious and apt to be dangerous with press on drivers - e.g. Spain and Italy. I'd go for a post 2001 ML 270 auto (not the manual) easy to tell as bumpers etc are body coloured which has 90 litre tank too.
