That diagram shows the UK legal requirement which I am sure Nigel as a former Police Traffic Officer can confirm.
Last time I looked the possible fine for having inadequate or inadequately adjusted mirrors was £1000.00 plus 3 penalty points.......and that is for each side of the vehicle!
You cannot defy the laws of Physics.......so as the Prof says to comply with the law you must have mirrors that extend beyond the width of the trailer / caravan.
