Sitting in a park and not for the first time either with very intermittant mobile reception. Does anyone know about an external mobile phone aerial that will improve reception.

Sadly unless your phone has an aerial socket - and most nowadays don't - there is no way you can connect an external aerial to improve signals.
Now if you are wanting to use it for Internet and e-mail rather than speech - things you would normally do on wi-fi - then a so-called mi-fi unit will do the job. You can put it somewhere where reception is good - in a skylight usually works well - and you have the advantage that if it is unlocked you can put any SIM in it to get a signal. You will of course have to feed the SIM with credit.
To confirm if other signals are available at your location, dig into your phone settings and find the bit where it gives you the option of selecting which network to use manually. Choose manual and it will (eventually) show you which service providers are available. Use that as a guide which SIM to use.
The other thing to remember is that a caravan is a pretty effective Faraday Cage (Google it) so try using your phone outside to see if that is the problem.
