Mondeo 2.0 TDCI (130bhp) v Mondeo 2.5 V6 petrol? (estates)

I'm sure I've read somewhere that on paper the V6 comes out slightly worse that the TDCI, but in reality the torque is more consistent over the gears than the diesel - is this right and given the option which would you chose?

We're towing an Ace Prestige 25 4 berth - 2 adults - no kids - one german shepherd. MIRO = 1171. MTPLM = 1389. I know both are good matches as per 'What Tow Car' outfit matching - it's more about the driving/towing experience.

Fuel prices not a massive consideration, I'm not sure the diesel gives massively more MPG, although I'm happy to be corrected. I know petrol is going up again.

We're getting rid of a Freelander 1.8 petrol which is a nightmare for towing as just not enough grunt to get up the mildest of inclines and makes me feel unsafe.

Many thanks in advance

Hi Tina.We have an 06 Mondeo 2.2 TDCI and we tow a Ace Award Morningstar.Miro;1215 Mtplm;1440.

What a brilliant towcar this is.

We drove from Bristol to the other side of Taunton with the van last weekend keeping to 55-60 on motorway and it really tows well.

Fuel consumption when solo is 40-45 mpg.

Power with the 2.2 is not a problem but we only take 1 gas bottle away with us and put the spare wheel in the van over the axle to acheive a 75kg noseweight.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Adrian, it's good to hear from someone who is actually using one regularly. There appears to be plenty of 2.5 petrols around cheaply but the 2.0 diesels are much more expensive.

I appreciate you taking the time to reply

I used to tow with a Jag X-type 2.5v6 AWD which is roughly based on the mondeo running gear. Great tow car & great solo but very heavy on the petrol. I changed to an X-type 2.2d (again ford TDCI engine). The diesel does more MPG with the van on the back than the petrol did solo lol

If i'd kept the 2.5 I would be paying 400 road tax. I presume the mondeo would be the same?

Well, the decison was made and the deal was done, today we purchased an 03, 2.0 TDCI, 139bhp - high mileage but a bargain at

Tina should have no problem if it has a good service history, diesils good for 150K.

i have a 2004 ford mondeo tdci 130 with 160,000 on the clock and it does have full service history but i would look at getting it checked out as mine has had faults that has put if off the road just as we were going away e.g turbo boost pipe,

turbo, water hose to oil cooler, fuel leak from injector pump, drive shaft.

even with this faults it has been a great tow car.

We had our first outing last night with the Mondeo and 'van and we're very happy.

New Alko compatable towbar fitted yesterday morning, new dog guard fitted yesterday afternoon, new plates on car and van and we were away LOL

Admittedly we only went about 20 miles away but took on Hands Cross Hill which was the main killer of the Freelander (down to 2nd gear and 25mph which was rather scary), the Mondeo took the hill initially in 6th, easy drop down to 5th and a steady 55mph all the way up, even overtaking a massive lorry, massive relief.

We are happy bunny's and looking forward to a long weekend away at the end of the month.

Thanks to everyone for their advice and help, this place rocks )
