As most caravaners & motorhome drivers spend absolutely nothing in motorway service areas, why do they expect service areas to provide parking and toilet facilities for them?

Possibly because it is the law that they have to.

Correct. For safety reasons all mway services have to provide a rest space for ALL drivers.
It is worth noting most services are owned by HMG then leased to a franchisee who run them for profit. Unless absolutely desperate why lay their extortionate fuel prices.
The privately owned ones like Westmoreland are clearly more reasonable on pricing ad value for money

But Gloucester south , owned by Westmoreland , set Gagakev back £19 for two coffees and sandwiches. Perhaps it's because southerners are deemed more gullible :)

I don't think the law says that they have to make it pleasant or cheap

I suspect that the bids for the franchises are so competitive that the companies are forced into a situation whereby to win the bid the downstream payments are so high that they have no alternative but to charge high prices and let out areas franchises several of which have no real relationship to the needs of the travelling public. In France, Spain or Germany when I go into service areas it's food and toilets with reasonable quality and prices too. Regarding fuel price advertising how difficult can it be? The so called trial is a nonsense. Just tell them to get on and do it, then see if competition makes any difference. Why we need a trial beggars belief. Our cousins across the Channel have been doing it for years. You see the next service areas price and the two after that with the distance to travel.

What beggars my belief is why do people buy fuel on the motorway?

Totally agree can’t think when I last bought fuel on UK motorway. By time Car needs a fill up it’s overnight stop time.

Never fill up on the motorway ! once or twice the odd £2o if pushed but normally brim the tank and edge the hose out before we leave for a long trip .

I've not found the need to do with the caravan how I used to plan with the motorhome, but if it does arise then I'll need to do some regular monitoring.

On the MH I knew the range of the fuel tank and would plan a day's drive to a tank of fuel on the route we were going to take, then look for campsites around the area and book them. Each morning fill the tank, earlier the better, as my days in the Middle East taught me to fill up early to gain.

I once led a convoy to Poland where the route was drawn up by using a piece of string equivalent to a tank of fuel range on a large map of Europe!!

So far in towing have not gone beyond a tankful on a journey.

Off on Weds for a few days, might start monitoring range.

I used to have an app that told you where to buy fuel just off the motorway but it stopped working some time back. May have to see if I can find another.

Try downloading the "Petrol Prices" app from google play

With it you can specify distance, from 5 to 20 miles from your location, petrol & diesel.

Works for me
