Vectra 2.2 petrol. With my 1300kg Coachman, bikes on the roof, aircon on, wife in the passenger seat, two strapping lads in the back, all the junk... c.16 mpg on motorways at 65 in 4th (5th far too high)and in stopstart traffic about 10-12. It makes me cringe to just write it...

Astra Mk4, 1.8 petrol auto with Bailey Pageant gives 32 overall, 43 cruising at 70 solo with 22 overall towing, 27 cruising at 60 towing. The aerodynamic shape, or otherwise, of the caravan makes a big difference. Our previous 800kg Ace was 2 mpg worse than the 1200kg Bailey

The 'computer' on my V70 D5 SE suggests about 33 mpg solo when commuting, about 38 mpg on a solo 'run' and around 22 mpg when towing a 135 kg Lunar Lexon across France. I know I have a heavy foot, others should better these figures - my wife does!

What a brilliant idea someone should move this to another section. Loved the petrol Vectras MPG.

Towing 1200KG 1800 Subru Impeza 13/28 MPG. Ford Focus 1.8 TD 18/45 MPG.

Towing 1435KG Citroen C5 2.0 diesel auto 25/33. Ford Explorer 4.0 17/22.

BMW 530d Touring Xreg manual;38-40 solo, 45 steady 70mph, 22-25 towing Spectrum 419 loaded to around 1600kg.

Had the same with auto box before and it was crap! Both in performance (especially towing) and mpg! Ever noticed how most tests of new BMW diesels are done with a manual? Makes you wonder doesn't it!

Dream on dave. There is no way your tdci returns that kind of mpg. There are petrol/electric hybrids that cannot do 61 mpg solo.

I get 18 solo and 15-16 towing but it is running on LPG and at the price that I normaly pay for LPG v Petrol this equates to 40.5 Solo and 34.5 Towing

Nice idea Mike. But as with all of these comparison threads out come the 'mine's bigger than your's' brigade. Presumably by 'the real world' you mean the odd traffic jam, trips along narrow winding roads, driving around looking for a parking space, towing up 1 mile long 1 in 8 inclines in heavy slow traffic, etc. Or are we talking about selective stretches of motorway once the speed is up as one or two of these fairy tales suggest? VW Passat 130tdi estate and Bailey Senator Arizona at about 1400kg. Real world : 43mpg solo and 24 towing. Some of the other's criteria : 75 solo and 50 towing

Renault Laguna 1.9Dti manual. 48mpg solo,.. 34mpg towing Bailey Pageant Megenta. Measured by filling tank to brim before leaving Pentewan Sands in Cornwall, then refilling in St.Helens in Merseyside. Does anybody tow with a Nissan Mistral (Terrano) 2.7 diesel automatic and a 3 litre Toyota Hilux Surf auto? Cant decide which to buy. I prefer the Toyota coz its different, but like the Nissan coz of the better seats (for me) in the front and rear. Help!!

Hi,

Great idea! - Alfa 147 JTD 16V towing 980kg's - 24MPG - solo - 50/51MPG. Excellent towcar and car by the way!

Incidentally, have you noticed that everyone seems to get roughly the same MPG towing, regardless of engine size and weight - it seems to me that wind resistance is more of a factor dragging consumption down than weight. What would be interesting if there were some scientifc test to show the difference in the 2 types of trailers with the same weights - 1 a caravan and 1 a flatbed, like a tipper or car trailer etc.....Any offers anyone??
