I don't agree with you on that one. Most people expect to be able to use a caravan at its rated MTPLM and would be disppointed if this were not the case. Also, many in the UK purchase a caravan based on observing the 85% max weight ratio. As this weight ratio is calculated using the MTPLM, this would put caravans with a higher MTPLM at a marketing disadvantage, especially when smaller towcars are involved.
That is my point! If a manufacturer produces a caravan that can safely be loaded to 1600Kg, and states it as such, then a proportion of potential buyers would work out that it is too heavy for their car.
So to increase the appeal of the caravan to potential owners some caravans are quoted as standard with an artificially lowered MTPLM of say 1450Kg.
We have seen on occasions that customers can apply to the manufacturer to have the MTPLM raised. in some cases there is no modification necessary, simply the re registration of the particular caravan at the higher MTPLM.
