The simplest mistake it to put the leads in the wrong connectors on the multimeter. If you use the current measuring sockets and then measure volts you put a short across the battery and will blow the internal protection fuse.

Always assuming that it has one. I have found that the really cheap ones do not have an internal fuse and can catch fire.
