There's Camping Pompeii right in the centre of town which we stayed at a lot of years ago which I can't honestly say I recommend. The only thing going for it is that it's close to the archaeological site at Pompeii. Other than that it's situated between the main road at the front and the railway line at the back of the site. Traffic noise and car horns go on well into the early hours then the first train goes past at 6.30am then every 20mins. We managed to put in three days there. On another forum just recently a member wrote about the local toms using the bungalows on the site to entertain their clients by the hour.

Thanks - have checked in to Volcano Solfatara in Pozzuoli. Bit of a hairy & interesting drive through the suburbs but campsite seems nice. 800 m to the metro into Naples. Will report on site at the end of visit in case anyone is interested.

We stayed at Camping Sant Antonio in Vico Equence last year. Situated on an old Marina you can get the ferry to Capri out side the gates. Windy road of about three quarters of a mile down to the site just take your time. we took a 7.8 meter twin axle. Have a look on Google maps. The owner will take you up to the station at the top of the hill, no charge, walk back but it is down hill. Sorrento. Pompeii. Naples all easy and the train is very cheap. Best pizza ever 9 euro and the owner delivers to the van door. ACSI site.

Thanks for all your replies. Will remember Camping Sant Antonio for next time. We spent 5 days in Camping Volcano Solfatara in Pozzuoli. Apart from a bit of a tight entrance which required us to breathe in as we went through, the campsite was fine. It was very clean but had no hot water for washing up (but the men's sinks round the corner had plenty) and no washing machine (not a problem expect that we had been on the road for just under a month when we got to Naples - problem solved as the current campsite in the Gargano has one!). There was also a slight smell of sulfur as the campsite is at the side of a crater but you soon got used to it. The train was about 20 mins gentle stroll downhill and cost 2€ to the centre of Naples running every 30 mins.
