We went on wednesday.
Having both sailing and caravanning as our hobbies, we thought we would have a busy day. How wrong we were.
Boating was in hall 1 or less than half of it to be precise. If there hadn't been a dutch barge there, they could of held their show in reception. I've never seen such a poor turnout of show trades before. It just goes to show how bad the recession has bitten. No wonder Midlands today were drafted in to push the boat show on telly.
I did pop along to the PC stand to say thanks for my tickets, but the editorial team were on lunch break I guess. Still never the less the troops did a fine job of getting me to sign up for a subscription and getting a free bag of auto glym goodies.
In the tourer section (hall 5), there was an abundance of new caravans and awnings to view, ut I didn't see many deals on the go. But there were hoards of eager sales people empty handed.
My main reason for going was to view the side stands for new inovations but there was only a dozen or so small firms offering their wears.
It might just be my perception, but I was quite disappointed, and if Cameron and his cronies think that private business is the key to revival, he'd best have a look at the NEC show. While ther was plenty of offers and new vans to look over, there is a very depleated accessory side stand contingent to support the current caravanner.
Tow sure certainly had a good slice of the accessory sales with their mobile superstore. The only accessory that seemed to be selling like hot cakes was, the folding wheelie boxes. We got a purple one from a side stand donating to cancer relief. SWMBO loves purple.
Overall I would say that If I had of paid £31 for two tickets, £5 for the show guide ( as per price on it's front) and £8 for the carpark, I would of been well miffed.
Ok, shows are there to show case new caravans, but the supporting side stands should be there to support every caravanner or motor homer.
On the up side. An accessory I was thinking of developing for people like me who can't lift heavy weight at present, has not been made. So I'm going to make my prototype and develope it this year. If things go to plan, I could be looking at showing this next year.
I'm sure others will of had a different experience and will share their views on here too. After all if you were looking for a show special deal on a new van, there is plenty of offers there and as there were few sold signs up. You will have a good bargaining chip.
