Hi leanne.
BMW 5 series would be ok to tow 1800 Kgs, but what about a XJ jaguar. You can get diesel versions (sacralidge to the badge) which give a very comparable MPG to most 4x4's and you get a very luxurious tow car and general vehicle. Price wise, they are very reasonable from non franchise dealerships or private sale. Service cost's are very reasonable and a small service is still within the capability of a DIY mechanic. The XJR is a particular favorite of mine as it combines comfort with fantastic performance. Being super charged, it has good low down responce and no turbo lag, which lends to good towing performance.

By what you said about having had a sedona etc I'm guessing that you are looking more for a saloon than an estate.

Another vehicle might be a mercedes benz, but you will find it hard to get a full service history example without high miles for simlar to the passat's value.

The latest 5 series saloon only weights 1700kg to 1905kg.
The estate 1710 to 1800kg.
Not something i would tow 1800kg with.
XJ saloon weighs1755kg to 1915kg.
So again you would have to be very careful which variant you chose.
Not for me i'm afraid.

How about an XC70 coming in at over 1900kg with noseweight at 90kg and 2100kg braked tow weight. I have the 205ps D5 auto which gives around 38mpg in normal driving.
