Never enough headroom!

It's that time where we are considering a replacement car for towing duties. I hate car hunting because you set your heart on a make or model and....wham! same old story. Never enough headroom.

I currently drive an old 110 Defender. I test drove a series 2 Discovery and felt pleased that I had a cm or so of space between top of head and rooflining but had to stop after 400 yards as I couldn't see far enough ahead through the windscreen. When the road dipped and rose into the distance, I was staring straight into the dip! The top of the windscreen was roughly level with the bottom of my eyes.

I sat in a second hand Disco 3 the other week. Have not driven it but with the drivers seat in its lowest position, I had about 1cm of free air above my head.

Can anyone suggest a make/model of car that will be able to pull a 1740Kgs twin axle adequately but that offers at least 1020mm of headroom for the driver?

BMW. Audi. Mercedes offer plenty with good leg and head room and plenty of seat adjustment, I weigh in a tad under 2 metres tall. The German marques always seem to cater wll for leg and head room. Another good reason why we've bought German for years now.

how tall are you?

I had a disco3 and at 6ft 2 there was heaps of head room (a good 6inches (if not more) even with a sunroof fitted.

I'm only 6'03", but here's the crunch.............. have a 29" inside leg :-( Long body I'm afraid.

Surpised at the Disco 3 I felt it had heaps of headroom but then I guess I'd be a few inches shorter when sitting.

Have you looked at the Hyundai Terracan as well ? thats looks like it could have more head room than most.

Good luck , I know how being a tall can have problems , mines leg room , sort of the opposite to you - long legs , and I struggle finding cars with enough driver leg room.

That doesn't make you exceptional Peri, my hubby and euro are both taller than you with longer body length. My nieces huband is 2070/6'9"+ and tows with a Viano.

BMW,Audi, Merc fit our boys OK.

Exceptional? No! In a demonstrable minority, Yes! It doesn't cheer me to hear of others with a similar ergonomic complaint, or in other cases, lack of leg-room, but it does cheer me to hear that others similar to me can fit into vehicles.

Are these the 4x4 versions of the makes that you quote, BMW, Merc, Audi etc? I would need a 4x4 to pull the twin-axle. I did visit a 4x4 used car specialist a number of years ago, based in Essex. I remember sitting in a Land Cruiser, X5?, Discovery (Mk 2) and a Range Rover (that was the worst for headroom). Yje dealer basically shrugged his shoulders and said that in 30 years of selling cars, he had never met anyone who could not fit in one.............. until that day!

My search will continue. Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

My wifes cousin is 6ft 9in and he used to drive a mini , not the BMW one , the original one and he loved it to bits and was sad when it finally packed up. It was a bizare sight to see him emerging from the car!!

Hi They are a old model now, but I drive a nissan terrano and at 6-11 I have about 2 cm of clarance to the head lining plus the option to move the sun roof cover,leg room is also good,
