no and they won't provide one, as there is no profit in free advertising. besides it is against the forum rules so these would have to change also, you can understand this position. as it would make weeding out the spammers more difficult as being members [you have to be one to post] they would be entitled to submit adverts.
it is a shame though, as sometimes new members would benefit from cheap good gear from other members who wish to dispose of it.
did the same my self mate gave up caravanning, shed load of caravan gear going to waste had no one to take it.
so it all went to the tip, not allowed to to tell folks it was there see.
Perhaps giving it away is not the same as selling it? 😉

perhaps that is true WC but if you have rules everyone has to stick to them opening the gate on one occasion due to a technicality [like it's free] soon ends up with a broken gate, through miss use.

I've asked for a classified feature for members to] sell their unwanted accessories on this website several times, after all, most other caravan forums have them and don't appear to have too many problems.Pedr01800 said:

We can't allow adverts to appear on the forum because members would soon tire of having to plough through adverts to navigate to forum threads that interest them

However rules are rules but in the long run it could indirectly become an income generator for PCv with more people looking at the online "For Sale" etc.

For some reason ever since I upgraded to my new computer with Windows 8 I haven't been able to see any avatars although I know that mine isn't the right way up.
When I finally get the time in between singing in choirs, doing up our kitchen and bathroom, decorating the lounge, going to the gym and hopefully getting away in the caravan for the first time this year in the next few weeks I'll spend a bit of time sorting out my forum avatar :woohoo:

Now Parksy Ive had an Idea I realise you cannot advertise items for sale but say I had an awning to get rid of and say posted I have an awning to swap for £50 thats not advertising for sale is It?Just a thought Im bored .Oh and by the way I havnt got an awning I want to swap for £50.

The rules in forum etiquette prohibit posts containing promotional material so either way we'd have to take it down. :evil:
The forum owners don't seem keen to include an online classified section on which to advertise unwanted accessories although free caravan / accessory advertising is available in the magazine.
If advertising was allowed to appear on the ordinary message boards many of us would soon tire of having to plough through endless adverts before we could reply to threads that were asking questions or containing information. 🙂
There are a multitude of internet platforms from which all sorts of free classified adverts can be posted so why ruin a good caravan forum with them?

If there was a PM system, which is NOT likely, then it may work, but PC are not even thinking about building a PM system for a variety of reasons.

yes it is a shame that PC seems bereft of benefits for members unlike sister mags that do. when the new forum was promised many moons ago it was supposed to be the latest all singing all dancing up to date forum,
but wasn't you still had to sign up to 3rd party sites to get avatars photos ect, and could not contact other members directly without the intervention of the mods, so it turned out to be all singing [with laryngites] and all dancing [with a broken leg] just like the old one [so no change there] it is a message board no more no less.
further up the thread I commented that when i sold the van there was a full set of equipment to dispose of all in good condition that would have been great use to any of the new members just starting out, for free as long as they came to collect it, included 2 awnings and everything else to set someone up. from water bottle to towing mirrors.
but because of forum rules could not advertise the fact, and it all went to the local tip. shame but there you go.

There are a multitude of websites that offer free advertising Colin, and free advertising is available in Practical Caravan magazine. There are online auction websites and car boot sales in most towns in the UK so if you binned the accessories instead of including them with the caravan that you sold it's hardly the fault of PCv forum.colin-yorkshire said:

how I disposed of the unwanted kit is not the issue, the couple who bought the van did not require it as it was not their first van, I did offer, and yes I could have got up at 4.30am and gone to local boot sale and stood there all day trying to shift it, just the same as I could have used other advertising media, may have even made some money, but that was not important, I would have prefered just to give it away to some newbie who was just starting out that needed it, as goodwill gesture so to speak, from a retiring caravanner, I am sure there would have been plenty of takers, but that avenue was not open because of the way the forum runs.
to turn this on it's head, I am building an old motor bike some parts are obsolete spent weeks rummaging around auto jumbles for the parts without success, so I put a wanted ad on the bike forum. got two PM's next day, one from a guy that had all I wanted for free just had to go and pick it up. I replied and after a 150mile round trip had the parts.
this is what is missing from the PC forum, could have been so easy to have done the same on here.

It's a well known fact that most of the caravan forums on the internet offer free classified advertising, and although I understand and to some extent accept the point that you are making, you stated that: 'because of forum rules could not advertise the fact, and it all went to the local tip'. This could be taken to imply that it is somehow the fault of the forum that you took your accessories to the tip, a point which I disagree with and can't accept because of the plethora of free advertising outlets on the internet.
I have asked Haymarket every time whenever changes have been made to the PCv forum/ website operating system if they would consider setting aside one message board solely for free adverts which would allow bona fide forum members to sell or to dispose of unwanted caravan accessories.
For reasons that have never been explained to me Haymarket appear not to want a classified advert section on their website, in fact although I've asked quite a few times I only ever received one reply (when Nigel Donnelly was the magazine editor) to say that the idea may be considered at some future stage.
The PCv website did host a caravan sales section at one time which was administered by an outside company but it was plagued by technical issues, caused problems for Haymarket (and for me who had to deal with many irate forum comments and also emails via my contact details) and eventually abandoned.
I've no idea how easy or how difficult it would be for Haymarket to set up, and more crucially, to administer and be responsible for a classified advert section, but from the lack of response so far over the years I would imagine that Haymarket have little or no interest in offering free online advertising at this time, but free classified adverts with a photograph facility are readily available via the Practical Caravan magazine for anyone who wishes to sell unwanted caravan items or even their used caravan.
This leaves us as a forum no better or worse than what we have always aimed for, a friendly informative caravan forum with which anyone interested can seek or exchange relevant information, discuss our collective hobby or exchange jokes, gossip, tips or simply say hello without having to avoid lots of adverts which can be found almost anywhere else on the internet.
Think of us as the BBC of caravan forums 😉 🙂

A good and well constructed, answer, the fact of the matter is PC forum is just a message board on a Haymarket web site. it is not a true user forum as such. as it is not a stand alone product advertising is allowed as long as it is about haymarket products or paid for advert space.
I can understand the reluctance of having a buy or sell section as there is no profit to be made in it, from the main page you can go just about anywhere on the web space except the mags free ad section, you have to buy a mag to do that 😗 we get regular up dates on blogs notices of some mag articles and tv programs but all are about PC.
yet you cannot inform other users you are wanting to give stuff away.

We can hardly criticise a commercial organisation in which jobs depend on profit for protecting their own commercial interests can we? 🙂
Most of the other caravan related internet forums have no commercial profit making corporate structure to be borne in mind when decisions about forum content are made by them, but Practical Caravan is a brand which Haymarket are obliged to protect and to preserve.
This is most probably why our rules appear to be a bit stringent at times, but this forum remains popular, it continues to help caravanners new and old thanks to our valuable loyal forum users such as yourself Colin, and although it's unfortunate that we have neither a classified advert section or a private message service, I'm always happy to try to facillitate off forum contact between members subject to their consent.
In cases where forum users are genuinely giving away caravan accessories I can't see anything in the rules that would prevent people from letting fellow forumites know, in fact we've allowed things to be given away via this forum in the past.
This thread came about when a relatively new forum member who didn't realise that we have a no advert policy apparently advertised goods for sale and the advert was taken down (I didn't see the removed post), and as you mentioned Colin, as soon as we allow one person to advertise the floodgates would open so we remove all adverts whenever we see them or they are reported to us by fellow members.
