Indirect vision devices (where they replace obligatory mirrors)

Not sure on the last one; Indirect vision devices (where they replace obligatory mirrors) if you have a tow bar fitted are they assuming you use the additional mirrors and you have to put them on for an MOT??

I think the indirect vision devices refers to reversing camera systems where the interior mirror is replaced by a camera view instead of directly via the mirror glass.

Thanks for posting this bit of information, Gagakev. We were not aware of it.

You may also want to know it will also include the actual towbar itself.

Click on Sprockets main link and scroll down (pages and pages) to section 6.6
Too big to copy and paste.

If you click HERE & look at the lefthand side of the page
Click on any of the sections rather than scrolling all of the way down

By the same token, if you want to avoid a towbar test, simply remove it. Weird thing is if you have a spare wheel with no tread it is a failure, but if you have no spare wheel it is a pass. As we have a 1996 vehicle a lot of it wil not be applicable to our vehicle so I do not see any issues.
Not sure how they will test for warning buzzers or warning lights which show a fault on the trailer as they can induce a fault?

the same way towbar fitters check the wiring with a trailer board

They will use a hand held unit whilst sat in the driver seat when checking the socket

I appreciate that the tester will show that the socket is working okay and the same applies to a trailer board, but unless a fault is induced i.e. a faulty light on the trailer, how will they be able to check the warning system in the vehicle and that it is functional unless they create a fault condition which legally they cannot do?

hi, this may sound stoooopidd but if the warning buzzer or light works when the trailer plug is in and doesn't when it out.
errr it must be working correctly as it is the draw on the electrical circuit which triggers the device.
as far as I am aware the devices are triggered when everything is working not the other way round so with plug in lights working beep beep beep light goes out nothing its not a warning that something is wrong more simply that everything is ok,

It's quite legal for the warning device to work the other way round, ie only give a signal when there's a fault.
It's the simple after-market devices which rely on the current drawn to operate.

Irthink my Volvo would show a warning light on the dashboard if a light failed, but if an indicator light failed it woudl flash on and off quicker than normal. I only know this was we had two bulbs go on the caravan within a short space of time. I have never had an issue with our current vehicle and the trailer so not sure what happens. Wasn't there some company trying to sell a device that allowed you to check your lights without leaving the cab? Think it costs about £99.

hi Roger, I must only have ever had the the simple after market ones fitted,
trailer plug in it beeps light goes out it stops doesn't matter wether it on the trailer or car same senario,
however the meriva has one allready fitted into the fuse box and a sensor in the rear loom how that works I have no idea as I have not towed with it yet or had a light out, watch this space.

hi all happy new year to you, whilst on the subject of mots i took the wifes car for an mot on the 30th of dec and was shocked to be handed a plain white a 4 sheet of paper with the mot details on they have changed from the old style certificate to this new one i know sometimes a batch of old old ones would get stolen and used fraudently but these are a joke

The MoT test has been computerised for some time - the official details are held electronically, centrally. The paper copy you get is just for your records.
The old system required security measures as the paper certificate was the official record.

Hi Howiet, know what you mean we had a works van MOTed in December and like you was issued with a piece of paper.
Speaking to the garage its apparently to save money!! AND you dont have to have a copy at all, if you think about it with todays technology .... Instant Number Plate Recognition ,VOSA, Data bases etc there is not much reason now to use them in a fraudulant way. You can Tax your vehicle on line which I do but not sure if you Tax in a Post Office etc if they are linked to the system, proberbly are and perhaps someone will tell us.

With the new mot piece of paper being blank & not embossed you can check everything online

I think that they ( the post office ) will punch the numbers in to do a electronic check before issuing a tax disc......

If you think about it ..........
When you go to buy another car........
smiley-money-mouth.gif
If you have a smart phone with you......

Ask to see the reg document you will be able to put the document numbers into the
MOT history check & see what if any MOT failures or advisories & it has had in the last few years.........

You will still need to take the new test certificate with you when you go abroad, along with your proof of ownership (log book) & insurance certificate
