Thinking of changing my car to a new Skoda Superb 2.0tdiCR170ps.

I cant' decide to go with the front wheel drive or pay a little more and have the 4x4 version of this car.

Anyone tow with either of these cars feedback welcomed.

I must add that I have just completed a week long 1000 mile solo test drive of the front wheel drive car and would like to say that this car certainly was what the name says on all counts.

50 mpg on mixed driving, plenty of power right through the rev range and supreme comfort for driver and passengers.

Also had the benefit of putting car on ramp to inspect underside and surprise, surprise, its all VAG AUDI as was most of the interior.

The only choice for me is 2WD OR 4WD.

Cheers Wayne.

Wayne,

Having test towed with both, the 2WD is good, but the 4WD version is so much better (almost Superb you could say!). Not only is traction better, but it appeared to be far more composed when towing. I haven't driven either solo, but if it were my choice, and I could afford the extra, I would, without hesitation opt for the 4WD version.

Hope this helps.

Nigel.

I have an Octavia vRS with the 170 CR engine. It is excellent and as you say can easily get 50mpg solo (30 towing). Never had an issue with traction but if I were going for a Superb would go for the 4wd version just for that extra edge.

I have driven this car. A very good performer. I don't see need for 4x4 unless you are taking your caravan somewhere you are going to going to get stuck.

This car uses 2 wheel drive 98% of the time via a Haldex clutch so if the road is dry or you do not have wheelspin then the 4x4 system doesn't operate. If you want constant 4x4 the new Suburu Legacy performs well.

I too am Thinking of the New Superb. Though am waiting for the Estate. I currently tow with a 2003 530d, and dont think that there is much in it weight wise and the 4wd will make up for any weight loss.

I have quite a big van, Lunar Quasar 615, but the BMW copes fine. Does anyone have any thoughts on how the Skoda would do with a light twin axle behind?

I think that the Skoda uses the same 4wd system as the VW Passatt 4 motion, which PC had under long term test about 1 year ago. That came out very well for fuel economy and towing abilty too.
