I am interested in the new Kia sorento which is due out shortly in the UK. Having seen some of the advance info on the internet is this a really new car or a rebadged Santa Fe. Not that I am against the Santa Fe because I feel this is an excellent tow car. I am looking to find a good tow car for towing just over 1500kg hence interest in the new Sorento.

The weight data that I have for the new Sorento is as follows:
Petrol:
Kerbweight: 1745-1830kg (5 seater); 1805-1890kg (7 seater)
Max. towload: 2000kg
Diesel (manual transmission):
Kerbweight: 1830-1910kg (5 seater); 1890-1970kg (7 seater)
Max. towload: 2500kg
Diesel (automatic):
Kerbweight: 1885-1971kg (5 seater); 1920-2008kg (7 seater)
Max. towload: 2000kg

The kerbweight is alot lighter than the outgoing model,but if you see pictures of the facelifted Santa fe they look very similar.

The new Sorento is a totally new car, although it does resemble the Santa Fe. I'd wait until demo models come along and give one a test drive to judge for yourself how it rides and handles. At the price it won't be an X5 or LR Sport but is that capabilty required?

It seems the Sorento is similar to the Santa Fe regarding nose weights. The auto version of the Santa fe being 80Kg and the manual around 88Kg. I also see that the max tow weights are 2000Kg for auto and 2500Kg for manual. I understand the difference in max tow weights for auto or manual but why differences for nose weights ?. Also what is the effect when caravanners load the boot with some heavey equipment such as tools, jack etc. does this not have some effect on permisable nose weights
Lutz, thanks for the info re the noseweight. One car I won't be having. 80kgs for a large 4X4 is silly.

I can't explain the difference between petrol and diesel and between automatic and manual, either. Seems strange to me too, but it was what Kia's Customer Service Dept. told me on the phone.
What you can put into the boot is limited by the maximum permissible rear axle load, not the noseweight, although the noseweight must, of course, be deducted from the available payload.

Its a lot lighter than the previous Sorento generation and puts it in the large estate car weight range
I have always assumed that the tow weight difference between manuals and autos is all to do with reducing the strain on the auto boxes and transmission and to stop them overheating. However with noseweights I dont know how they are set or arrived at.
Why would a vehicle such as the new Sorento or Santa Fe which have quite high kerb weights have such low nose weights. I can understand that every car has a rear axle load limit, which seems very important to me, but in most car specs it is never quoted. My orginal point on how you may load the boot was based purely on that by reducing the amount of kit you may put in the boot what would be wrong with say allowing an extra 10Kg-20kg on the nose weight ? This may be a completely wrong deduction on my part.
It does seem crazy that cars from different manufacturers which are very similar in power, kb weights etc have such varied nose weights.

From what I've read the new Sorento is as different from the original model as the Sierra was from the Mondeo.
Personally I think Kia are going backwards but no doubt they have done their market research???
My 2005 Sorrie has a 140kgs noseweight and the Sachs self levelling suspension.
It does the job very well pulling the Wyoming so I don't think I'll be changing.

I agree I now have areal dilemna as I was planning to buy a new Sorento to replace my 04 XS but the new one does not meet my needs. The original (current) Sorento has an auto witha higher towing load than the manual so autobox cooling etc is not an issue.
They are both made by the same company.It was formed through the purchase of 51% of South Korea's second-largest car company, Kia Motors, by the larger, Hyundai Motor Company, in 1998.therefore you will always have models matching each other.

Whilst the new Sorento may look like the current Santa Fe they are different cars. The next Santa Fe is due out end 2010-early 2011 and will be based on the new Sorento. I understand that the next Tuscon and next Sportage will be based on the same basic design for floorpan and powertrains. With the new Tuscon out first. There are numerous spyshots of the new Santa Fe and Tuscon on the web.

The new Tuscon IX is alraedy released and there's several vidoes on Youtube. Also the new Hyundai Portico is ready for release in the US this may be the next Santa Fe, but it looks to be bigger than the present model. Again on Youtube
I saw a Hyundai badged car in the US that looked exactly like a Kia Sedona. I guess that sort of thing is bound to happen.

Now we've packed up mainstream work we've decided to keep our 05 Sorie as long as possible. She's on 75k and now she's out of warranty I do all the servicing myself . The uksorento.com site is brilliant and I've been on there since 2005. Everything you need to know.
So what will I eventually replace the Sorie with? Certainly secondhand. Otherwise I'm not sure at the moment.
I've noticed a lot of Sorie owners on site this year so something must be right!

i have a 57 plate santa fe cdx 7 auto. yes the max tow bar is only 80kg it also has self levelling suspension aswell. i keep 2 gas bottles and a few small light bits in the front locker. my nose weight is always the same 80kg spot on. we travel with the jak and stuff over the axel. it tows fab and looks so level i cant complain.

I agree there should be no difficulty attaining 80kg. However from recent checks this Summer on the M5 I undersatnd that the police found something wrong with 100% of the vans checked. You just know that when vanners arrive oon site and empty the locker that they msut be well over the max limit which for most van chassis is 100kg anyway.
clive, i agree we tow with either the isabella capri lux, annex and ground sheet or the isabella magnum, annex ground sheet in the boot along with the dog. we dont wanna be much over the 85% and the nose weight has to be spot on at 80kg. i cant complain the santa fe tows really well and we get no bobbing or twitching. i know towing with a twin axel is more stable than a single axel but im just trying to explain myself cos im pants at doing that.
