We have decided to buy another tug to replace the current Shogun. Going to get the July holiday mileage on this one, but Im looking at the following. Another Shogun SG3 or 4, Volvo XC70 again or maybe XC90. Cant bring myself to the Kia or Hyundai after the Shogun, any suggestions for the list. Has to be 4x4 and pref 7 seater. Im not a big fan of Landrovers.

Hi all
Ihave had a 3.2 Shogun 8yrs ago then swapped to a new ford kuga great tow car, then went to a 1yr old Volvo xc90 wonderful vehicle had that for 2 and a half years now own 1 yr old Volvo xc 60 R -design 2.4 more than capeable towcar anr very good fuel consumption when using solo but towing averages 25-30 depending on speed and wind conditions.I think the Showgun 3.2 is a great car especially the latest model but I think they need to update the engine to give better fuel consumption and emmisions to bring the road taxation down.

I have been looking to replace my 53 Nissan terrano for a little while now, I have only had it since September but I have never really been happy with it as a car and the fuel consumption is obviously a bit high. So I have been looking aound. I likethe Shogun and there are plenty out there within my price range, same goes for the XC 70/90 but again they seem to be a bit high up on everyday fuel consumption and road tax. I have also looked at Landrover, Honda CRV ( a bit too light on the kerb I feel for my Adria Tamar) and the L200 Barbarian as well as KUGA and Sante Fe. Sometimes I think that there is too much choice out there and other times not enough.

I have driven both the L200 and Navarra through work and found them awful except when heavily laden. For that reason alone I would personally steer clear of pickups. Im looking at two years old, Ill never buy new again and the Disco is too pricey in comparison for that age unless its got 100k miles on the clock. Its coming down strongly in favour of another Shogun at the moment. Fuel consumption is high I grant you but its something I can live with for such a stable and acomplished tug.

There are many reports of them being "a bit agricultural" and I agree with that statement. But its what I like about it. They are tough as boots and utterly bombproof, cant say that about many cars. It carries the loads, carries seven if needed, pulls the biggest caravans and will go anywhere, and if you asked it to do all that at the same time it would do that too.

That said, I absolutely loved the XC70 and would have another like a shot. The XC90 I have no experience of but I do like them too. For me, things like the Sorento, Santa Fe, XTrail and CR-V are neither one thing nor the other. If I am going to go 4x4, it will have to be a proper one.

I can well see your point. I swapped my focus in for a quite battered terrano when we bought the caravan, maybe I was a bit naïve but I knew it was a bit of a wreck when I got it but I didn’t cotton on to how much of a wreck it was. Anyway didn’t cost much and as a tow car it has done the job if a bit sluggish when it’s asked to tow up hill. There is a long line of things wrong with it from broken air con to dogy driver’s electric window and something clonking underneath…. so I am at the moment looking at a 2010 Sante Fe 2.2 CRDI 4x4 which has the weight and power to tug my Adria Tamar as well as slashing my fuel bill. Actually it has a lot more power than my Terrano, about a third more so hopefully it won’t groan when going up hill on a motorway. I have looked at bigger cars likehte XC90 and shogun but I am not really going off road and as you say, the flatbeds are an awful ride unless you are loaded down (used to drive them around when I worked out in Djibouti the year before last and they are not comfy for those sat in the back at all).

SS, remember the SF is a self selecting 4 x4, it will stay in front wheel drive until it detects slippage then it goes into 4X4, You can lock it into 4wd if required and as soon as you go above about 25 mph goes back into front WD. And back again as you slow down. So you get resonable fuel economy, and you will have more than enough torque.
