Hi I have decided to purchase 2 new tyres for the caravan this season, I just wondered if anyone has used etyres? im looking for a mobile fitting service.

Also I keep seeing Tyron Bands mentioned so thinking of having these fitted too. How much should I be looking at for 2 tyres with Tyron Bands fitted?

thanks

I used E-Tyres when i had ours changed, it had Tyron Bands fitted in the old tyres, the tyre fitter just re-fitted them into the new one's, they were the best on price & i would recomend them

There is no technical scientific evidence that wheel bands make any significant difference to the safety of towing.

Make sure the tyres you buy are new! I know that might sound stupid, but I recently had my tyres replaced as they were seven years old, fitted in 2002, but one them was dated 1995!, and no, it hadn't been swapped. It appeared to be someone's old stock. Ask the fitter to point out the date on the new tyres.

Good point there Emmerson.

Discount tyre dealers can only offer discounts if they get them too. Usually there is an underlying reason, and that can often be the age of the tyre that has been hanging around in the warehouse.

I'm with John on the tyron Bands. If they are that good, they would be fitted to all vehicles as standard.

To be honest, if you look after your caravan tyres by keeping them inflated correctly and protect them from sun etc. Also either take the wheels off or regularly rotate the tyres if the van is going to stand for a long time. The tyres will be quite adequate on their own.

Most 6 or 8 ply heavy duty tyres which are fitted to caravans will endure a sudden deflation and remain reasonably intact long enough to get you to the hard shoulder or other safe spot to change the wheel.

On the topic of tyres what is the recommended life for a spare tyre. Mine is 0904? It has spent its life under the van, or in it and twice a year it gets liberally coated with Armorall.

Cheers

Just bought 2 new Maxmilers today. The dates onthem are 4009 so made in October last year. I suspect part of the problem is that caravan tyres are not changed as often as car tyres and so stocks can sit for a few months in the warehouse.

For those who are interested the cost was

Scotch Lad, did you change from steel rims to alloys? If so, did you remember to buy the appropriate wheel bolts, and use the higher torque when re-fitting them?

Hi to you all.

i have been fitting tyres for 13 years and own a caravan.

bit sad but i no my tyres.

my advice in this topic-

any tyres on a caravan dated over 5 years replace mine are this month like new still got lable on spare. all van tyres need to be at least reinforced or 6ply. the bands you talk about are not easy to fit but they do 1 job if you get a flat without bands your tyre can leave the wheel with a band fitted the tyre cannot leave the wheel.

i would also advise you to have a can puncture seal most new cars come with these as most cars dont come with a spare wheel nowadays (crazy) but true.

the first thing i did with my caravan was fill the tyres with nitrogen (we do this with all tyres) the main point of this is constant pressure and no matter how hot or cold your tyres get the pressure stays the same if your van is stored for a long time your pressure drops this is because oxygen in the air leaks through rubber. nitrogen - no oxygen - no loss of pressure.

hope this helps

chris.

Eddie,

Yes, I did buy alloys and yes, I did get new alloy wheel bolts as well, but thanks for the reminder. I have not fitted them as yet as the van is still in its 'jammies', but later this month hopefully will get them changed out.

Michael,

Sorry you did not get any luck. All I can say is that Kwikfit list GT Radial as a recognised brand they will supply, and my local dealer had them ready to fit within 24 hours. All I can suggest is try another Kwikfit branch, or call their head office and see what they can do for you.

Terry, I also looked at them, but by the time I added the VAT and delivery, plus getting them fitted locally, I chickened out and just went down the road to Kwikkie Fit.

I do notice that the Maxmiler seems to be a very popular tyre for vans and has very good write ups in the trade. My first set have given 5 years unblemished servcie in cold and very hot and over 10000 miles of running, so I look forward to the same from the replacements.
