New Tyres

So changed my 6 year old tyres and 10 year old spare with VANSMART MCV3+ - good value all round tyre size 190 75 15’s - 186 all 3 - piece of mind with week 3 22 tyres

I just changed all tyres inc spare on my 2015 t/a ,the tyres that come off were what the van was supplied with when new and to be honest even the tyre fitter said they were in not to a bad condition for age.

new rubber fitted is now 185/70/14 Nexen's ,had Nexen's in the past on a few cars and my campervan and find them a very good mid range option 👍

That’s the thing the tyres I had taken off looked fine - a spare never used etc but I would rather be on the safe side - don’t fancy a blow out on the M6 especially on the smart lanes - or on the back road to Oban from Stirling

Yip i tataly agree, i was going to change mine last year but i risked another season even though they were perfect looking .

But its always in the back of my mind on every trip that they tyres are starting to to age.

👍

Every year we have a full service completed by the caravan engineer and one of the checks is to assess the tyres which are now five years old. Any concerns he has at this time will be dealt with immediately and if this is tyres they will also be changed. Safety is a primary concern for us and for other road users we come into contact with, so we can enjoy our breaks away with no problems

The cost of tyres is worth the reassurance feeling that YOU have done all you can do to keep your family safe and others - most garages do a change - I took my van in hitch up they did it in 30 mins all 3

Better safe than sorry although the tyres on our old Coachman lasted 10years without problem but that was before the current advice came in. On he other hand the tyres on our Avondale showed cracks after six years so you do need to be aware of tyre age problems.

The advice to replace caravan tyres after 5 years use or 7 years from manufacture date has been around longer than Coachman has been in existence - but publicised more recently.

I would not feel comfortable driving knowing I had out of date tyres - mind you I bought my first caravan oblivious to anything and towed it to central Scotland from Liverpool first trip - no break away cable - tyres ancient - you live and learn I was lucky I was not stopped by Police

Likewise my first van had plenty of tread on the tyres. So as far as I was concerned it was okay. First trip out at 60 mph heading towards Newport on the dual carriageway, bang the nearside tyre blew out The outfit behaved impeccably. It was only when the recovery came to help change the tyre did he educate me on caravan tyre care.

Since then I’ve always put on good quality tyres and changed at five years, and the spare at seven years.

Having just bought a caravan, I checked the tyres - all dated 2020 .......just out of interest, what's the average price to replace a tyre?
Thanks
Steve

There’s no average it’s just like cars you choose what you feel is best for you.
My last Hankooks Vantra LT were about £80 each fitted and balanced. Budgets could be had for half that price Michelins and Continental for more.

Thanks for the info.
Ours have another three yrs in them at least so we are good to go.

Nexens all round on van and also hankooks all round on Santa Fe,will service Santa fe in the next week or two and thats me all set 👍

Our tyres are nearly 5 years old and still look as good as new. Probably won't bother changing them until they are about 7 years old if they still look good at next two services.
Probably go for a decent quality tyre, but not premium and preferably not Hankooks or Dunlop despite glowing references about them.

What's the problem with Hankooks then?

I went for the Hankook K117a, as they came tops in a report that included driving over wet grass, I hadn't seen that included in a tyre report before.
They are used as Original equipment, by Hyundai, Kia, Porsche and Audi.

We had them on our Lunar many years ago and they seemed to be prone to side wall blow outs as one tyre blew and another almost went that way, but we noticed the bulge which was on the inside. Both tyres were about 3 years old when fitted to the twin axle caravan. Similar experience with Dunlop except I was travelling at speed solo on the equivalent of an A road so not pleasant. Hankooks may have improved since then but still prefer to steer clear of them.

I have had Hankooks on cars and caravans and found them to be absolutely fine, and as you say they are OEM now on a wide range of cars.

I did not realise that. I only became aware of this when the engineer servicing the Avondale pointed out the cracks and told me about the advice. That was some 8 years back and before I was using the forum.

I started caravanning in the '80s - the Caravan Club had (probably still has) a range of technical leaflets that members could order FOC but the never seemed to publicise their existence or contents - I ordered some and found out about tyres then.

Despite the often inevitable pedantic debates, caravan forums have done a grand job in the internet era of spreading much useful information.
