Newbie.... but going big.....

Hi
I have never had a motorhome before and I am finding it difficult to find what I want.

Our plan (wife and I) when we retire in a year or so, is to drive around the world.
I want a motorhome that is 4 x 4 or be configured as such, with the only bed being over the cab (I don't want another bed in the main cabin). We intend to go to some far out places well off the beaten track so it has to be rugged and be able to take poor roads. Also, be suitable in very cold conditions.

Has anyone got any advice / ideas.....

Thanks in advance.

Doubt if you will be able to travel around the world due to politics and wars however why not a trip to Morocco? When choosing a motorhome it needs to be on a base, i.e. Toyota where spares are readily available and the vehicle is easy to fix.

Modern motorhomes with all the possible software issues like ECU controlling engine etc probably unsuitable for doing any grips across places like Africa i.e. a sensor fails and only a dealership can resolve the issue.

Think carefully before jumping it

Look on sites for Overlanding. You will get lots of advice for planning the trip, plus see what vehicles are being used , and what fitting out is required.

I know a guy went from UK to South Africa in an old Land Rover. Then started a part time company doing off road tours. He’s now full time taking such yours to Europe and North Africa. A piece of advice he gave me was to select a vehicle that has minimal electronics!

Choice of vehicle will obviously be down to your routes. There are some good panel van conversions that come with OEM 4wd.

Do you regret letting your Corolla go ?
In one way we do regret it as it was even older that her 1997 Corolla. Our biggest issue was because it was low to the ground was exiting the car. However did not see any point in having two vehicles with two lots of servicing, insurance etc.

A colleague at work took his motorhome once around the world when he went into retirement. If I remember rightly he had it shipped to South Africa first, then to Australia and finally he toured North America with it before returning home. That way he avoided all countries of unrest. He didn’t have an all wheel drive motorhome but quite a large American RV.
Also, a few years ago I met a couple while I was on holiday in Amman, Jordan. They were en route overland from Switzerland to South Africa in their Toyota Landcruiser with a pop-up roof. They told me that it was already the second time that they had done it - once from south to north and this time the other way round.

Given you've never had MH best place to start is hiring one to see if it is you.
If you plan to go where 4wd is required then join 4wd club as passenger and learn about recovery.

This couple literally travelled the world in their old Fiat Ducato campervan.
They have a great video series of each country they visited along with details of various issues they had with transporting their vehicle.

Hi Tony 1974 Welcome to the forum like what someone says I would hire one for a couple of weeks then see if it what you want to do enjoy
