Nissan X Trail Blow up.!!!

I have had my Nissan X Trail 2.2 diesel from new, Sept 2004. Two months ago I had a major problem, but this was not while towing. The car lost power, suspected it was a turbo problem, so I continued on the 10 mile journey I was making....BIG MISTAKE.!!!!

After about 6 miles, the car started to smoke from the exhaust....and I mean SMOKE. I stopped immediately, switched off the engine.....but it didnt stop, it continued to rev flat out (10000rpm I'm told).

After 3 further 10000 rpm minutes, the engine expired with a massive bang as the radiator exploded.

Engine was ruined, only 57000 on the clock. I had to replace the engine with a second hand one, plus costs of engine removal and re fitting....TOTAL £3500.

The most frightening experience I have ever known, 3 mins at max revs while the engine feeds off the engine oil, the smoke was amazing.

If it ever happens to you....STALL THE ENGINE immediately, and certainly dont try to continue if the power suddenly drops off indicating a turbo problem.

I had that happen after an oil change on a Citroen BX

Some of the oil got down a breather pipe or something and was fired causing the engine to rev like mad as it ran on the oil with ignition off but not for long

I related the tale to a local car dealer who had just sold his own Discovery and he told me that the head gasket had gone on it when the new owners were on M6

He said that they got out and ran away from the car so I can well imagine your terror

Today I saw a 59 reg Discovery being winched onto a brakedown truck-how disappointing

DPF filter on some mazda cars have been the cause of over filling the oil sump, resulting in the same problem.

Refer to honest john forum, some very long threads on the issue.

I understand you have to violently stall the engine, but HOW?

I assume while stationary with the foot brake on, put it into 6th gear, and lift the clutch?

If so what about resulting clutch/gearbox damage?

Anyone had to do this?

Hi Mick

Although it was expensive for you, it could have been a lot worse as you read in my account. Sorry to hear you suffered a similar experience....I am sad, as I really liked and enjoyed the performance of the X Trail.

I am now looking to change the car as the engine I have used as a replacement is an unknown quantity.....I'll give it a few months and see how it goes. I'm thinking Hyundai or Kia with a good engine warranty.
