Nissan X Trail capabilities

I have a 2006 Nissan X Trail with the 2.2DCI engine, and it is top of range and weighs 1660 kgs with full fuel, nothing else and no driver. Have just bought a Hymer Nova 465 which has a MTLPM of 1600 kgs, but would expect to run it less loaded than this, probably around 1500 kgs.

This would give a theoretical ratio of nearly 100%, but I have towed it 200 miles (empty) with no probs, felt rock steady.

I have been told that Hymers tow really well as they have a long drawbar and good alko stabiliser, but does anyone have any advice as to whether this combination will be sensible/safe?

Hi Pete, we had a Hymer Nova 570 (1700kg) we towed it with our sorento, we also were told it would tow well.

I think they tow like a 'brick', we have just swapped it for a swift conqueror 630 twin axle, it's 100kg heavier than the Hymer, but towes far better!

I wouldn't like to comment on your outfit, it is a very close match, but a lot depends on your experience and if you feel comfortable about the match!

Hi Pete, we have just recently bought a Hymer Nova 530,( 1600kg ) I went over to north wales to pick it up & then tow it back home I think it was about 170 mile back home, I was impressed it towed so well, yes it big at 23' long by 7'6" wide by 8' tall I came up the M62 from Rochdale at a steady 60mph up the big hill, I towed it with my Isuzu Denver Rodeo 3.0 Auto, ...

Just been to fill up with diesel, and the up to the ministry weigh bridge, I grossed out at 2170kg my truck has got a back fitted for our dogs to travel in, my Hymer can weigh 1600kg max axle weight, I work it out that fully laden I will be running at 76% ....Steve

hi pete i have a nissan x trail 2006 2.2dci aventura i put mine on a weighbridge and it came out at 1760kg.we purchased alunar ultima fb this year miro 1260 mtlpm 1600 we were a bit worried about the match but have just returned from paris and it towed perfect,we dont run fully loaded either about 1500kg i would say am now happy towing down to spain this summer

Thanks for the advice, I think it is OK but my wife is a bit worried about the figures.

It seems to me that the theoretical 85% figure is a bit of a myth bearing in mind that it is based on a van loaded to capacity and a car kerb weight (based on a car without a driver!) If you load a bit in the car and less than max in the van, coupled with sensible driving you should be OK (I hope!)
