nissan X trail towing problems

Hello

We have a Nissan Xtrail which up until now has been able to pull our Avondale Dart without any problems. However, over the last few months we have noticed the car is kicking out loads of black smoke when towing our caravan and does not seem to have the towing power it use to have. When driving solo it is fine and therefore it has been difficult for the garage to diagnose a problem. Has anyone else ever experienced similar problems?

injectors have been known in some cases to be the problem, i would also check the air hoses for splits and loose clips, by that i mean the turbo air route.

If the fuel filter has not been changed for 2 years change it, same applies to the air filter. I assume its the 134bhp diesel, or the earlier engine which was noted for black smoke.

i have the same problem with my 03 diesel xtrail i think this is a common fault ok solo just when towing was told it may be due to over filling engine oil . passed emissions test ok so not overly worried.

We had the same problem with a 02 X-Trail, it is a common problem along with turbo failure/problems we decided to sell ours as it was close to our normal time to change, I believe the Garage put new injectors on prior to re sale,

We had the same problem with black smoke on our 1st XT a 51 reg when new

The Uk dealer put off doing anything so much that we ended up after arriving in Spain with a very black caravan at Inter Diesel at Figueras

We had to put on rubber gloves to unhitch

We arrived and with no common language set out to explain the problem

The workshop manager came to the car and I revved it up whereupon the guy heading for an adjacent vehicle disappeared in a black cloud

All was then apparent to the engineer and they kept the car for a few days and replaced the injectors and system anti pollution whatever that is

All this was explained with bits of engine sign language and spitting sounds!

It was a lot better after that but never as good as the 2 later 2.2 diesel XTs that we had and the present 2.0 diesel current model

has your car been for the boost valve replacement? it should have had a recall for this. some models also had the ECU reprogrammed. If not your turbo is prone to over boost. Also i had my intercooler changed in the first year of ownership in 2004, the original is a crimped version, while the replacement is completely different and will give no problems, maybe you could get a contribution from nissan?

I have a 54 plate 2.2dci engined SVE which is a great car and tows our 1600kg van beautifully, but it has a slight problem which no one can get to the bottom of. When accelerating away from a roundabout, or pulling uphill it will suddenly "go flat" as if it has hit a rev limiter, it doesn't slow down but won't go any faster. This can be cured by lifting off the throttle and accelerating again when it is fine till the next time (could be 10 mins, could be a week). I think it is getting a signal from somewhere to say "no more boost", and lifting off resets it.

At the moment I am not too worried as it always resets and has been going on for about 18 months, but with all the talk of turbos on this model.....

Any ideas?

It could be the turbo vanes sticking, from 2004 a variable vane version was fitted. Its worth giving it an italian tune up, give plenty of revs in every gear, foot to the floor. Just say to 4k, any car will benefit especially if like me you normally drive around the 2k revs or lower.

Or maybe the boost valve is acting up?
