Have always quite liked the X trail but thought it a bit underpowered but through the forum realise there is now a 170 BHP version. How well does this perform compared to the previous 136 BHP version.

Its interesting that you thought the X Trail may be underpowered

Over a 9 year period I have had the 112,136(2) and now the 150bhp diesels and all have had plenty of torque to pull a 1500+kg caravan at legal speeds and as far as Spain etc

My previous 2 cars were chipped for more torque but I never felt that even the 112 bhp needed any power boost

James,

Used to tow with the early 118hp diesel and found that excellent towing 1350kg and up to 33mpg.

Last year got the 173hp. Towing 1600kg with no problems.

Solo the grunt is awesome but to really use it select 4wd!

2 caravanning friends have just bought the 150hp and both find them excellent. One says the difference in power between the Xtrail and his old Terrano is amazing.

The thing to be aware of as has been highlighted on this forum already is the Xtrail spare wheel is supposedly not to be used for towing. Nice one Nissan!

I have the 173bhp version but have never driven the lower powered versions. I will say it pulls our 1375kg (max) elddis no problem. Keeping the speed down is the only real problem.

James and I must have written at the same time, yes the spare wheel (Cost saver it should be called) is a bug..r but I have now sourced one on e bay. The supplied cost saver specifically says NO TOWING. The only other minus point is the DPF (diesel particulate filter). This bugged me on holiday twice having to find a road to do 50mph for 19 miles to clear the DPF light, difficult on the Isle of Mull. I find this stupid, you would have thought that X trails were at home in remote places.

Brilliant in every other way, almost too quick solo.

I average 38 solo, 26 towing.

James s

I had the 134bhp Xtrail SVE, and i have to say apart from slow of the mark, i found the car a pleasure to drive, and NEVER felt the car lacked grunt, the economy was very good too.

I now have the 171bhp adventurer explorer, and yes solo it is quicker, but towing i felt the old xtrail had the edge, i seem to be doing a lot of down shifts while towing, compared to the old model, yes the new x is slightly higher geared, but not by much.

Still it is a good towcar, and last time out towed the van as stable as my last one, i have had to increase the nose weight to 90kg from 85kg to get it "feeling" as well planted as my last x.

Which brings me to my question and request. Considering the car should have 266 lb/ft of torque and 171 bhp (and only weighs about 100kg more). I can't help thinking its either needing more miles on the engine, presently at 4k, or i have the WRONG engine fitted.

So would new xtrail owners please check what number you have under (the numerous) you cars vin, i refer the the sticker ones scattered around the car.

Only under my vin number is the number (on the bottom left),150.

Now does this refer to the engine rating 150hp?

On the drivers door pillar another sticker states the car is a 173 adventurer. But it wouldn't be the first time the wrong engine has been fitted.

Thanks for all the positive info. I probably should have indicated that I am looking to tow a new Swift Challenger with max weight of 1560kg. But this newer X Trail seems quite good from all your comments

Hi again

We tow the equivalent Ace Award Nightstar at 1560kg max weight with the 2 litre 150 bhp diesel XT

Its magnificent and has now done 20000 miles with only one problem(door actuator noisy)

So you can rest assured that the 173bhp will not disappoint

Holdcrofts in Crewe have some new Irish XT imports at a big discount

Meant to post the comment as a reply but just to add that we go to Leek Blackshaw Moor site and cross the roaches steep hills on the Buxton road and the XT and van fly up them

Hi,

I have the 173hp aventura explora, and have recently changed caravans. Our new van is a twin axle bailey with an mtplm of 1589. Our first trip was around 440 miles return and the xt performed very well returning around 24 mpg. Great Car!.
