No indicators or brake lights

Hi all, hope you can help. My son is currently enjoying his first weekend away this year in his van, but he has a problem with the indicators and lights on his caravan. When he plugs his van into his car, he gets no response from the indicators or brakes, so we tried plugging his socket into our towbar (which we know is working, having just returned today from a week away in our van)and still no indicators ect. We are assuming this is a caravan problem, and not the car. Has anyone got any advice as to what the problem could be? Thanks in advance,

Cheers Roy.

Hi there

have you opened up the plug to check for corrosion and also some vans have seperate fuses for rear lights failing that does he belong to the aa or rac and call them out

good luck

Does he have sidelights?

It could be the earth pin on the socket that has a problem.

Is it a new style 13 pin plug/socket or the old 12N/12S twin plug set up?

On the new style 13 pin set up, pin 3 is the earth for the indicators/side & brake lights.

On the old style plugs, pin 3 is the earth on both plugs.

Hi tony, no, there are no lights or indicators of any description, and he has the old style 12n/12s setup. Ihave told him to check the earth as you suggested. Thanks for your input,Cheers, roy

Quite common problem is faulty 12n plug and/or socket due to corrosion, take apart and clean up or replace is a better idea as they are not exspensive. I then spray mine with my motorcycle chain lube which stays put and prevents further trouble.
