NO MORE MIRRORS NEEDED !!!!

The klaretech website doesn't show up on my PC so I can't judge but from your description I would recommend that the manufacturer in South Africa checks whether such a setup is, in fact, legal in Europe. I have a feeling that the law only provides for mirror type rear view and any electronic feature like the one described can only be supplemental to but not instead of regular mirrors.
 
Freelander Td4 owners have never had to have "a screaming wife behind the van" thanks to the drop-down rear window, which allows the driver to hear whoever is seeing you back, without having to raise their voice. Alas, Freelander 2 has a different rear door design.

yeah but the problem with Freelander Td4 is they always brake down and you never end up getting any were,my advise would be to stick to the camara and a different car smart arse
 
I have a similar set up with a permanent rear view canera on the caravan and its excellent--even has sound.

BUT without the extended side mirrors you do not have one blind spot you have two--one down each side of the caravan where you need to be aware of objects that are not in the field of view of the camera especially if such objects are overtaken/overtaking vehicles
 
It is frightening to think that anyone would contemplate leaving their mirrors off for such a thing,the legality of which is only secondary to the safety aspect I get shivers just thinking about it. Please post the forum when you are going out and we can all stay home safely and paint the shed.

Value the various comments you make and wonder if you can give me some advice on a preferred/suitable type of extended mirror when towing with a Nissan X-Trail.

Van due to be delivered in May and want to buy the most suitable/best type of mirrors.

With respect Chris the camera may be legal and be a fantastic bit of kit but you still have to have mirrors fitted to see down the sides of the van by law! Until the law says extended mirrors ar not needed if you have arear view camera you are stuffed.

Should you have an accident with something to the side of the caravan and not have extended mirrors so you can see that area in an extreme case you may find yourself prosecuted and even uninsured.

A product having a CE mark does not necesarily make it legal to use it for a particular application.

For most electrical products The CE mark in general only indicates that the manufacture belives the product meets the relevant standards as they can self certify. Some product categories are different - such as gas appliances - where the product has to be surveyed and tested and approved by a notified body before it can have the CE mark awarded. Abd with gas products they must have a CE mark before they can be sold in the EU.

Without seeing the camera system, I cannot be sure but I suspect that the CE mark only referes to the manufacturing of the product, rather than its possible uses.

Just as an analogy, you can buy a car which is of an approved design, but that approval does not mean you are allowed to excede the speed limit.
 
Chris far from knocking the system or resisting technology as in my previous posting I already have the rear view colour/sound camera but would not use it without the extended side mirrors to give a view down both sides of the van

Not only to comply with curreny regs but to be seen to comply with them as perceived by the police etc.

I still managed to damage the rear nearside corner of my van as even with the camera and extended mirrors there was still a blind spot when turning left .
