to remedy the problem i have bought a small plugin charger from halfords to charge the battery from within the caravan which works fine...

You will get all kinds of answers to your problem, all of them will have no knowledge of your system, therefore all of them are merely speculation and anecdotal "remedies".

If as you say the van is 26 years old, then it should be rewired as wiring is only "lifed" to 20 years.

For your own safety and those of your family (if applicable) get a qualified electrician to check everything out, after all, electricity in the wrong place at the wrong time wil kill you.
