Hi does anyone know of any nice sites within an hour's drive of Sunderland. We can often only get away from Friday evening until Sunday and dont want to travel too far. We always tend to use Caravan Club sites but have exhausted them and need some new territory to try out.

Iris,

Tell us what sites you have used so that we don't repeat ourselves and then we'll try to help.

Maureen
We mostly tend to use White Water at Stockton. We have used the Grange at Durham but this is just a bit too close to home. We have also used Hargill House at Richmond.

Iris,

Is Nunnykirk too far for you? It is a no facility site.....really peaceful. We were pleasantly surprised the first time we decided to try it and have been back since. If you have a dog there is plenty of walking for it adjacent to the site.

It isn't particularly near anywhere, but if you just want to chill out it's ideal.Rothbury is the closest for shopping and Cragside House ( NT ) is well worth a visit.Huge grounds to explore as well.

Have you thought about using CL's ?Some have basic facilities, but others are as good as some of the sites.

It may be a little bit over the hour but we use Kielder CC, and we live in North Shields so not too much nearer than you. In fact if you go up the Darlington/Corbridge road it may even be quicker. Again a CC site but you have the choice of it being a peaceful break or an activity break.

You could try South Meadows Caravan & Camping Site, Belford. The A1 is about a mile away, but doesn't cause any real noise problem. It is 15 miles north of Alnwich and 15 miles south of Berwick. 6 Miles inland from Bambrough. This is a privately owned site, but well run by the owners. All the amenities are of a high standard, and possibly better, than the CC! They have a website:

Hi Ann

Thanks for that. I have had a look and it looks really nice. We would like to give it a try but can you advise what the approach road is like for towing from the A1. We have experienced some of these B roads and they can be quite narrow.

Thanks

Hello Iris. You will have no problems at all driving from the A1 to South Meadows. You take the Belford road off the A1 which is an excellent junction. The road into Belford is a wide and after about half a mile you turn left to go along to the site (watch out for the entrance cos I missed it and had to turn around which was a bit tricky).

I can well recommend South Meadows - when we stayed there the owner even pitched our van for us.

If you visit Alnwick look out for the cafe upstairs in Collectables. Really good. If you visit Wooler look out for Foulis fish and chip shop.

Whilst in Wooler you could always check out the Riverside Caravan Park.

Happy towing.

Not sure what its like these days, but we used to spend many, many weekends at Fallowfield Dene Caravan Site at Acomb, just outside of Hexham. Dual carriage way all the way from Sunderland to Hexham then single carriageway for about two miles up the bank. Last half mile is single with passing places but it posed no problems.

Fallowfield have a web site.

Have you tried the Caravan Club site and Seaton Delaval overlooking St. Mary's Isle just north of Whitley Bay. Nice site, good views and not too bad to get to.

Had another thought - bit further but Thirsk Race Coarse is an excellent site. You can walk into the centre of Thirsk within minutes.
