I have never seen an adder in twentyfive odd years working and dog walking on the moors which is not to say they are not there so I would not stick my hand into possible adder haunts on the moors - or anywhere else for that matter. One of our dogs was prone to getting sheep ticks which we dealt with using surgical spirit then tweezers.
Alan, if you haven't already done so, treat them with Frontline. Keeps the sheep ticks away.
Also,please be aware of ground nesting birds on the moors while walking your Springers.
But have a nice time in God's own country.

We live on the edge on the North Yorkshire moors you will have a great time at Low Moor its a lovely site.
Over the years I have only seen adders on two occasions and we are keen walkers who use the moors regularly.
As dave & dee mentioned keep the springer close to you with the nesting birds and ticks are a real problem since sheep dipping stopped so treat your dog with frontline before the trip.

Mention of ground nesting birds reminded me of the fact that the moors are used for game bird shooting. One of my dogs once found a live twelve bore cartridge on the ground and thought it wonderful fun to run around with it in his mouth chewing it the while, dropping it near me then snatching it up when I tried to grab hold of it.

Thanks for that. We use Advocate on the dogs , mainly because it counteracts fox mange and other worms. However unlike Frontline it doesn't kill ticks. I'm off to the vet this morning.
As for the aders that is reassuring. They are good well trained working dogs and will "stay close" and respond immediately to the whistle.
