Has anyone caravanned in West Norway (north and south of say Bergen) near the fjords. There seem to be plenty of campsites but what are the problems in actually getting to Norway with a van - what ferries ? and what are the roads like.

20 years ago, our very first caravanning holiday took us to Norway and we will be returning next year. My wife wants to be at the Arctic Circle on the 21st June to see the Midnight Sun.

The problems that we had back then were not the ferries to Norway, but the multitude of small ferry crossings within the country, particularly along the west coast. At high tide, the ramps were sometimes relatively steep and slippery when it was raining. This made traction on the ramps a problem under those conditions as we had a front wheel drive towcar at the time. Also, some of the roads along the fjords were rather narrow, requiring occasional reversing the outfit to passing places. However, I expect that the road conditions have improved in the meantime and we look forward to going again.

Roads can be rather twisty and we found that you need to allow plenty of travelling time.

Bridge to Malmo and through Sweden was easiest for us.

A really good web site!

Visitnorway web site is very comprehensive I think you will find answers to most of your questions there, weather and even brochures to download. Also check out the driving regulations, towing speed limit is 80kph.

Went to Norway for 28 days this June.....

We travelled via Denmark / Sweeden / Germany.

We used the bridges for the outward journey and ferries for the return, there was no price difference and there is no need to book.

There is no problem finding campsites that are to a high standard and mostly fairly empty.

Nearly all have Wi-fi included in the price. usually around
