How would a Kia Sorenta 3.2V6 Automatic compare with my Current Rover 2.0V6 Manual for towing...

I know it's not diesel and I am looking at all my options, but fuel consumption is really not too much of an issue, we both walk to work so the car is literally used for social and towing. As for towing, it is say every 3-4 weeks between Feb & end of October, plus a couple of main holidays, so the proportion is low compared with every day driving, and my overall milage is around 5k per year.

So back to the question, if I decided to go petrol route rather than diesal (just a tought) would this car be better, much better, much much better?

Just checked it - worked for me ok so link is all ok

It would eat almost any van towing duty and be really smooth at doing it. Don't know the exact figures but I would assume over 200 hp and buckets of torque.

I had a 3.0 LPG powered Shogun for a couple of years and the only reason for getting rid, actually it was passed through the family, was that it was SWB and too cramped.

Broadly speaking I would say that a 3.0 litre petrol will perform about the same as a 2.2 litre diesel in towing ability given that it will display different characteristics, revving higher to achieve take off and climbing hills for example.

If you are not bothered about fuel consumption and want a really smooth powerful towing machine then a large V6/8 is the way to go - a Sorento V6 would fit the bill admirably I would think.

My favourite, if money was no object, would be the Lexus 300 Hybrid but dreaming aside, my old Bighorn will still do the job for a few more years!

cliveV, I've just read the piece in the Independent, and I would hardly fault the car for the driver's lack of skill! The Sorrento seemed to come out of it quite well, and from a dyed-in-the-wool green oval fan, that's praise indeed. I have actually had a test run in Sorrento, and must admit to being impressed. Wrong shape, wrong badge though.

I f I can be banned for a month for calling someone a numpty for dragging in 4x4' s to a perfectly sensible and up to that point adult debate on fuel types, then there is no hope for me staying on here (at least with this "non de plume") for very long!!!!

If you get enough for a pint - let me know and i will come up and drink it with you!

I had a good look at Lols Sorento at Easter - It was very good.

They get a good write up usually and agree with what you say about the idiot driver (he was a jounalist - and one from the Independent as well!) but I agree that the Santana or LR would put up with the abuse far better.

But if you want to just be assured of sure-footed safety and no trouble on a wet grass pitch - I agree with the CC - who made it Tow car of the year.
