We went to Calais in November so I've had a quick look at the statement.

We made four debit card purchases totalling £267.00 and our building society (not Nationwide - it's the one that's in schtuck) have charged us £10.87 for the pleasure!

How do they justify these charges?

We were however, suitable informed that all charges on foreign purchases would be dropped after 1st January 2011 - I should jolly well think so!!!

We use Nationwide too, but mainly their credit card, there is no fee for that. We used to use the debit card to withdraw cash, but now they are charging for that.

So we have now got a Halifax Clarity credit card each, and as account holders we get a £5 "Reward" if we spend £300 in a month, which is not difficult when on holiday. There are no fees for using this card abroad. You can also withdraw cash without a fee, but there is of course interest. This is 12.9%, so as long as you pay everything off each month, it works out quite reasonably.

If Nationwide is your main account and has been for some time, I don't think there are any charges for overseas payments on Debit cards.

The information we were sent was that there would be charges for Debit Card use and cash withdrawal in Europe, which had previously been free, and higher charges for use outside Europe. Credit card use in Europe is still free, but there are charges elsewhere.

Those who had the account as their main one would be "compensated" as they would be eligible to receive various "benefits" such as free travel insurance etc. However if you are over a certain age, and various other restrictions, many of these "benefits" are of no use to you.

I have now finished with Nationwide and have changed banks as they have lost the plot
After a lot of research I now have an account with the Metro Bank with no Debit Card charges anywhere abroad.
And a Post Office Credit Card with no charges worldwide abroad.
Nationwide Credit Card I believe dont charge in the EU, I think, but I dont use it anymore now anyway.
