On this day...

On this day 61 years ago the world nearly ended and nothing to with climate change. Anyone remember the Cuban Missile Crisis which started on this day 14th Oct 1962? Luckily common sense prevailed and we were allowed to continue with our lives.

Also on this day in 1947 US test pilot Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to break the sound barrier.

It’s not widely known but Yeagers aircraft embodied many design aspects of the British Miles M52 as part of a technology transfer agreement. But the flow of information eastbound suddenly dried up after the successful US flight.

WRT Cuba it was riveting viewing on tv and my parents were fastidious in checking everything in their 4 minute warning stockpile. In fact my wife still adhere to that concept with non perishable food squirreled away in the most obscure stowages.

Nikita Kruschev and John F Kennedy were eyeball to eyeball over the discovery of Russian missiles based in Cuba.

With nil announcement the US agreed to move their missiles out of Turkey. This was quietly carried out after the crisis had become history as far as media were concerned. A sensible compromise.

But Russia continued to increase its nuclear capacity while the USA left their missiles in Italy, removing the others as said from Turkey.
The US maintained their naval blockade for quite a while around Cuba.

Nowadays mentioned the Cuban crisis to anyone under 40 and most do not have a clue that the world almost ended back then. I was a teenage in SA and although not near any nuclear conflict, we still had to listen to the speeches on what to do.
