The Skull and Crossbones, or Jolly Roger originates from early sailing days to indicate there had been a death on board. It started to be flown by Royal Navy submarines in WW1 in response from very senior Admiralty officers that submarines were underhand, unfair and un English, and nothing better than pirates. Since then RN submarines arriving back from certain missions have flown the Jolly Roger. There’s even an exhibit in the Submarine Museum displaying the Jolly Rogers from submarines going back to WW1.

Here is HMS Conqueror on her return from the South Atlantic.

Maybe I am old fashion and not woke as cannot see anything wrong with flying either of those flags. As we live in Malvern maybe we should fly the old South African flag just to upset him? Only kidding as don't have one anyway. 🤣
 
This is what happens when you try to rewrite history to meet modern standards - the Civil War is a major part of US history just as the slave trade is a major part of UK history but trying to white-wash either, or use them to justify todays' actions, is just wrong, plain and simple.

I'd suggest that use of the Confederate flag is a car/vehicle context is simply a rebellious gesture that doesn't warrant comment by UK councillors - I don't recall they objected to "The Dukes of Hazard" when it was shown on TV.

My understanding is that the main use of these flags is so that people can find their vehicles in a crowded carpark - which wouldn't work if everyone flew a Union Flag or St.Georges Cross.
 
Here’s a YuoGov poll conducted in America on whether the Confederate flag represents Heritage or Racism. The results split between older people opting for heritage, younger ones for racism. But the interesting results come from the southern ex Confederate states. I say no more.

My belt buckle has a Confederate and lone star state of Texas flag,one of my good mates has a trike with a Confederate flag on it, he's asian.one of my other buckles is of an elephant.it does not signify I've ever or intend to be an ivory poacher
