For Spring trip to Spain it would be nice not to be tied to a fixed return date. Has anyone experience of difference between buying two one way tickets (one in advance and one "on the day") particularly on the Western channel routes, and if so, how did the costs compare with the normal early booked return fare. I've also found some website will not allow you just to book a single - how do you get round this ?

Thanks in advance.

I have always booked a return journey regardless of whether I actually travelled on the actual crossing stated on the ticket or not. At least during the off-peak season, ferry operators will honour tickets for different crossing so long as there is space available on an alternative ferry. But best check with them first.
