Hi Forum Members

I would appreciate some advice regarding my car as a towing vehicle, towing an Avondale, Special Edition (Golden Mayfair) based on the Dart 545/4 Purchased new 2007 Dealer & Manufacturer advised they could re-plate this caravan at the manufacturing stage from MTPLM 1240kg to 1200kg to suit my tow-car at the time (Kia Shuma Hatch Petrol 1.8) the caravan has only been towed once to a site in Devon back in August 2007 and remains there on site and in storage.

My circumstances have changed and I intend to move the caravan and tow with my present car a Kia Ceed LS CRDI 1600cc (113BHP) Diesel 1367kg kerb weight, first registered 10/01/2007

Please can you please advise on the match and is it safe and legal?

Many thanks, I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Geoff,

A quick calculation gives you a 90% match using the figures you posted. What you do not say is how far, what equipment will you be transporting with the Avondale. In essence you should be ok, although your towing experience appears maybe a bit low. Put some of the heavy items in the car, others over the axle area. Give the running gear a good check over, especially the tyre pressures and condition.

Just take it easy, no high speed,

Good luck

According to the data that I have at hand, the maximum permissible towload for a Kia Ceed 1.6 CDRI is 1400kg, so why bother to have the caravan replated? As David writes, taking into account the existing weight ratio of 90% based on the figures that you have given, you are close enough to the 85% recommendation, bearing in mind that unless you obtained the kerbweight from your V5c document, the actual kerbweight of your car will probably be more than 1367kg anyway. Besides, you can always restrict yourself to 1200kg, if you want, without replating.
