Outside Light, works only when it feels like

We bought our new VAN in 2008, and to cut a long story short the manufacture has gone bust so we have no back up or support.

Since new we have a strange problem with the outside awning light.

The light works fine when we are on Mains, if we come off mains it still works fine, that is until I connect it to the car.

When connected to the car the awning light goes off, I assume this is to prevent it being on when the van is being towed.

The strange thing is, even after I disconnect it from the car it won't come back on, that is until the van is connected to the mains. I only need to connect to the mains for a few seconds and it then works as normal, even on the van battery, but the second it is connected to the car again, it stops working.

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

HI! Jeff the reason it will not work when hooked up to the car is the car has a relay that as soon as you hook up to the car it switches the relay that cuts out everything bar the fridge. then when you switch back to the mains it switches back after a few seconds to 12V.then the light comes back on

cheers Duggie

Hi Duggie

I realise why it switches off, but it should switch back on when I disconnect from the car. It doesn't unless I can connect it to the mains.

If I go to any site that has not got mains we are stuffed for an outside light.

Hi

Although the manufacture has gone bust if you purchased through a dealer then they are responsable for the guarantee, under the sale of goods act 1979. If the sellers are washing their hands of the problem then you might like to down load a template letter from www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/complaints/letters.
