We are travelling from Leicestershire to Montignac (Dordogne), arriving via Eurotunnel in France at 4.15pm. Ideally we would like to drive 3-4 hours down the A16 before finding a stopover. We have always used the Aire Baie de la Somme but this then means a 12 hour journey to the site the following day. Does anybody know of any other safe aires off the A16 (probably near Paris) that are suitable for overnight caravan stops?

I would suggest Camping St Nicholas at Le Bec Hellouin about 20 miles SW of Rouen.
In the morning go Alencon, Le Mans, Tours, Poitiers, Limoges, Ussac and Montignac.
Le Bec is about 250Km according to ViaMichelin and will take just over 3 hours. Advance booking is a good idea.
It has good facilities including a swimming pool, and a nice bar/bistro.
The route above is just over 600Km and will take about 7½hrs. The more westerly route is 588Km and will take about 7hrs so its as short as its long really.

We used a municipal at La Ferte St Aubin. Close to the motorway south of Orleans and some nice eateries in the town.
Unfortunately this is only open on weekends (we would be staying on a Thursday evening) and only accommodates camper vans/motorhomes 🙁
We wanted to avoid the Rouen route hence heading down the A16 towards Paris and then taking the N10.
That’s changed then as it was for all vehicles and tents plus 7 days per week. Probably Covid. There was a site a but further south used by british and Dutch over nighters. Short walk into town for super market and eats. Try and remember the name.

PS edit talking of cross purposes the Aire Municipal I’ve not stayed at. Campsite Le Cosson used to be managed by the municipality

Why the need to avoid the Rouen route? Been that way many times and never got held up even after the bridge collapse a few years ago.
For no other reason than it is a longer route.
