Cheers Dave I think I will leave the towbar on clean it up and give it a few coats of hammerite.Hi Michael,
The ideal way to paint your rusty towbar would be to remove it from your vehicle and have it dry abrasive blasted to Sa 2.5 standard (near white metal) followed by a zinc phosphate epoxy primer, epoxy intermediate coat and finish.
However, if you do not want to remove the towbar from the vehicle then you will have to carry out the surface preparation by hand / mechanical tools. First of all make sure the towbar is degreased thoroughly and fresh water washed. Then scrape and wire brush, and emery paper to remove as much of the corrosion products as possible followed by three coats of Hammerite or surface tolerant epoxy mastic. Remember to let each coat dry for the recommended minimum overcoating period or the coating you apply is like ly to blister or craze.
Hope this helps,
Dave
Michael,
I guess it's how comprehensive you want to be on something which costs circa
Cheers big Roy I think I've got one of them somewhere i'll have to try it.Michael, if you buy a rotary wire brush from the likes of B&Q that fits in a drill chuck it'll bring the rust off a treat.
Cheers JohnHammerite sounds the best bet after the preparation mentioned.
It says on the tin apply two thick coats and that the second coat must be applied WITHIN 8 hours
