Passat tiptronic

I have bought a Passat 1.9 saloon sport with tiptronic gearbox to tow an Abbey GTS 416. Do I need an additional oil cooler on this gearbox.Be grateful for any advice. Rob Williams

Modern automatics already have an oil cooler as standard or do not need one. In fact, if you have an oil cooler fitted to a new car without approval from the manufacturer, you may even lose warranty coverage.

Robert,

No you don't need an extra oil cooler with either the Tiptronic or the multitronic gearboxes fitted to the VW/Audi range.

I currently tow with an Audi A4 2ltre Tdi multitronic with no gearbox oil overheating problems & used to tow with the Audi Allroad with the tiptronic box, again with no probs

Hi Robert,

I also tow with a Passat 2.0l TD SE auto.

No problems at all with overheating, the car is the best towing vehicle I have ever used!

I think you have got the important advice already. Just to say that towing with tiptronic is great, particulalry on long downhills e.g from off the plateau in Spain to the coast. Just tap it down a gear or two until you get the speed with which you are comfortable and relax. it is so easy to go up or down one (or more) gear/s with just a simple tap. Also good for overtaking if you do not have much margin. just go down one until you are past the overtaken vehicle without any risk of loosing speed if the auto changes up when you are not expecting it. magic.

Hi, Robert out of interest what's the towing percentage between your car and caravan and do you have any problems. Only reason I ask is we have ordered a 2.0 TDI (140bhp) Passat Highline and hoping to purchase the new sterling europa 495 but was thinking it may be to heavy??
