I started a thread about caravanners saying "do'nt know its on the back" when towing, of course its just an expression as LB put itin his answer. Now we have Imegrants and oversea workers and it is quite intresting reading the comments ,howeverits the remarks made about the " £10 an hour and semi-skilled/skilled" that i wish to comment on .Speaking to members of my family on the male side and regarding are they skilled, or as a contributer say's they are really only semiskilled if i read it right, thejobs they do are as follows.

Ceiling fitter .(does commercial properties and large contract with well known TV station)

Kitchen fitter.(City & guils joiner ,electrical, gas, plumbing papers)

Cabinet maker.( C/G ,does high class reproduction furniture and has done a 40+ dining table and chairs for a member of the royal family in the middle east/also ex lecturer at the London college of Furniture).

Finacial advisor.(with all the necessary certificates).

Refridgeration/air condioner engineer(designs plant and cercuits, with many qualifications for multi millionn company)

Handy man.(works only by recomendations, has trouble fitting the work in as it interfears with his 3 cruises a year with P&O and other holidays).

Now we come to the £10 per hour, oh by the way we live in the South East. All have more or less said that for £ 10 an hour its not worh getting out of bed.

Now the semi/skilled bit, if we are/was not skilled i do not know the defini

tion of the word, of coarse the Handy man is what you call semi but this year he and his partner have sailed to India, now on a Med trip and in July off to another)not bad for a semi i think.

Hi Robert,

Skilled V Semi Skilled only two jobs on your list would come under skilled

1 the Cabinet Maker

2 Refrigeration Engineer.

Sorry but the others are very easily learnt, and over not very much time.

The title skilled or semi skilled is realy irelevant but what is relevant, is the average wage in the UK is

hi frank , what makes you think this handy man is working 'cash in th hand' perhaps your overseas workers are working cash in the hand, at the end of the tax year the handyman will have have to fill in hsi tax return , morgage ,kids ,pension, saving for when his body can no longer do the job,car ,van ,hoildays all paid with no or little money coming in , not like the overseas workers working on your propety.... if you have nothing interesting to say ,say nothing at all...pete

Ref the "skilled/semiskilled" argument, sorry, discussion: When I served my time as a heavy motor vehicle mechanic, the term was five years, with the last year being spent as senior apprentice, with my own apprentice learning from me.A local lad has just completed his "apprenticeship" this year, as "vehicle technitian" His age? 17!!! He cannot have left school till he was 16, so one's training makes him a "skilled" man.The world, truly, is going to hell in a hand cart.

Hi Emmerson ,

Don't forget he may have left school with a couple of A levels, and he may be able to use a computer to diagnose problems. The world changes as do the tools. Who Judges Skilled or Semi Skilled ?? is it the market place ???or is it in the eye of the beholder. I don't know, what I do know is that our economy is in the best shape it's been in for 20 years. Gordon says so everytime he comes on the box!!!!!.

how about me then?

I hold a city and guilds 224 in electronic servicing, CITB Certificate in pipework and brazing (refrigeration)

and all I can get for a job is assembly worker on minimum wage???

as my company simply sack anyone who asks for more money and get a Pole in

this is in no way racist but the truth, I can in fact prove it as I have taped and filmed evidence, but no one wants to know as it may upset the "Apple cart"

Hi robin, I don't doubt you whats so ever, problem being I think you are probably over qualified (Thats the norm answer)

I am a Audio/Touch Typist,VDU operator. I earned a good wage in North London several years ago, but we moved to Cornwall, doing the same work as a Civil Servant I was rejuiced to earning a quarter, now I did and still do not mind the money as the way of life down here is much better.

My point is I was told I was over qualified, how can anybody be over qualified.

I can also the problem on not saying anything because people would get the sack and replaced by a cheaper model, disgraceful.

I have changed jobs completely now but I still use my typing skills, on occassions.

Regards Liz

Having just looked through the postings, and having to remove several due to the nature and language used, this thread is in danger of being deleted totally if more similar posts are submitted.

Thank you Mr. Mod. I think in future you and your colleagues will have your time cut out in policing the forum as it appears to be getting more personal every day and the choice of some language leaves a lot to be desired especially considering it is intended as a family orientated forum.
