In the recent PC there is a test of the Freelander 2 versus the Tiguan. It states that the cars performed well in the swerve-stabilty test when pulling a Bailey Sancerre, but quoted the MIRO of that van. Does anyone know if the tests are carried out usinf MIRO or with a van loaded to 85% kerbewight? The latter would be a more meaningful comparator as the only time my van is at MIRO is when its going for service, or on its journey to and from its storage site.

Unless both cars are towing the SAME caravan weight, then i see no logic in the comparision?

Okay but surely a weight of MTPLM is more represenative of the real world as and it should be as close to 85% as possible. Don't forget the cars are also unlikley to be loaded with a typical outfit of gear, or passengers

To me it doesn't make sense to test at 85% because this does not necessarily represent the worst condition. Many people tow at over 85% and it would be of interest to them how the outfits handle under those less-than-ideal, but still permissible conditions. Results under ideal conditions can only be better. Therefore, testing should be done at MTPLM, whatever the actual weight ratio.

While Lutz makes a good point re towing with a heavy load, i still think that to compare two vans, side by side the test weight must be the same, that is assuming we are doing a comparison test.

Yes, of course the test weight must be the same if you are doing a comparison.

I agree with the above comments and there are clearly a number of ways in which the towabilty and swerve tests could be carried out, but there is at least agreement that MIRO is not close enough to the real world to be realistic. Perhaps the Practical Caravan team can explain the rationale please.

Cheers
