Hi all
We have put a deposit down on a used caravan with a large main dealer, they have asked that we pay the full balance at least two days before we pick up the van. They are carrying out a pdi check but if anything is found to be a concern how are we to know until the day of pick up, what’s your advice please
Thanks
Dave

Never hand over money until you go to collect it and have inspected it . If a dealer is not happy with this cancel walk away and ask for return of deposit, Also make sure any warranty is in writing not verbal. Money nowadays can be Pinged to the sellers account in seconds

I’ve used cards to pay the full amount on collection. These days money transfers without any undue delay. The only time there may be a glitch is Sundays if IT systems are being updated ( or hacked).

We brought a caravan from a dealer paid a deposit he gave us his bank details and we did a bank transfer for the balance on the same day he brought our caravan to our pitch at 2pm

Only pay the balance on day of collection and only after you have inspected the caravan. Rings alarm bells asking for money 2 days before collection? if they go bust in between now and collection, you lose everything!

Remember that under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 from date of delivery you have 30 days in which you can reject the caravan and get full refund. After the 30 days and within 6 months you need to give the dealer one chance at a repair before rejection.

We were asked to pay for our last car 2 days before collection. It was a large main dealership, part of a group. We duly did this. There wasn’t a problem but I agree with others that with fast payments these days, it seems unnecessary.

It is probably because they want to save time on the day itself and to establish that you have sufficient funds. The other factor is that unless you have banking on your phone, you cannot do the electronic transfer. We do not have banking on our phone and will not have banking on our phones.

I did the transfer of funds for the car the day before collection, but this was at an established brand dealership. I would not do it with any caravan dealership as many have gone bust over night.

You can do transfers on the day without a phone - many people use a laptop or tablet and take it with them when buying a car or caravan.

I made payment for my car last December just using my debit card in the dealerships chip and pin machine. Went through without any delay, just like buying a newspaper at Tesco garage.

Some banks impose a limit of £10,000 but others don't.

Does that payment go through immediately?
I pay off my CC each month by online bank transfer. The Cc say it takes 2 days to appear on my CC statement. My Bank account shows it as pending.
Maybe its not as clear as we all think? And would you insist paying on your CC for the sect 75 cover? Even if the dealer made you pay the fee?

Yes it went through immediately and was way over the £10k limit mentioned by Roger. Yesterday I made a sizeable payment (Sunday) and within seconds my wife’s phone pinged and via her banking app it showed payment made from the bank account. When I pay my credit card bill by online bank transfer I get a quick text from the card provider thanking me for the payment. Whether it’s pending to them I care not, but they seem content. You don’t need to pay for a big purchase totally by credit card to get Sect 75 cover. I paid the deposit for the car on credit card. Think the limits are £100-30000.

We use our debit card to pay for my wife car at a dealership on the day we collected it went straight through last August .
Was that a deposit under £10000 or full amount for the car? I think our card holder restricts us to £10000 maximum on a day and I have no objection to that amount.

Although my bank, one of the big four, imposes the usual £100 limit on contactless and £500/day for ATM cash withdrawals, they impose no limit on Chip & Pin transactions other than not exceeding the credit balance plus our overdraft limit.
