hi i had an peugeot 307 sw 2.0 hdi brand new nad bought a brand new avondale dart 556/6 in oct 05. when the van was put on the back of the cars rear end almost sunk. the max towbar weight is something like 65kg and the dealer hadnt told us this. on paper the 307 could do the job but its the max towball weight that spoils them as a towcar.

i could just get my hand under the back wheel. it doesnt help the wings of the car are plastic and light. avondales wheels are quite far back from the a frame which makes them nose heavy.

i wouldnt have another 307 sw if afraid lovely car but not great for nose weights.

what year is your avondale?. ive just pxd my 05 in and it had front and rear panel cracks. check out this monts new pc mag someone has wrote in about there cracks.

sorry you havent heard what you wanted to hear

stephen, so sorry for you mate. if i had done my homework i would never had bought one either. mine was 4 days out of warrenty aswell avondale didnt want to know. the dealer i pxd my van with was an avondale dealer and i was gonna walk away from the deal but fair play they still continued with the deal.

i now own a 2008 sterling elite onyx.

its a shame you cant keep your car and px your van in.

Stephen, with respect to Jo-Anne, I can't beleive you are dismissing the 307 just becuase of one persons comment! If you always take that approach you will nevere get anything!

I say this becuase my Parents have a 307 HDi 90PS (albeit a hatch version)and they towed my 2002 Lunar Stellar fine and when I upgraded to a considerably heavier 2005 Lunar Clubman they also found it to be fine. Stability wise there are no issues at all, only the lack or power with their version gives a slight dent to what is otherwise an excellent towcar.

See what others have to say before making your decision - maybe the SW is different to the hatch?

Oh, I tow with an Alfa 147 JTD 16V and its AWESOME!

Hi Stephen

I have a 307 2.0hdi 90bhp hatch. I have towed an old little Adria Optima and a Bailey Discovery 474 with it - both lighter than what your looking at. It towed them both really well, and felt more stable towing our bigger discovery then the 06 Zafira which we do most of our towing with now.

Now have a Ranger 510/4. This is within max weight of the 307 but not such a good match so will keep with the Zafira. A Zafira will do a similar job as a car to a 7 seat 307 SW if thats what you are looking at. They pull well but you have got to get the tyre pressure right otherwise you'll be all over the shop over 55mph.

We looked at Avondale Darts last year. I asked a dealer about nose weights because I had read on this forum a bit of scare chatter about them being nose heavy. The dealer pointed out that Avondales were actually really well balanced - and pointed to the fact that they locate the gas lockers at different points on different models to aid weight distribution, rather than always siting the gas on the nose. I've never towed one so can't really comment.

What I would say was we were always able to obtain our 60kg nose weight for the 307 by packing the vans appropriately and it was always stable. Lacked a bit of power but mine is only the 90 bhp model. Can't be many tow cars that will get 600+ miles on a full tank when not towing.

Good luck.

Mat
