Hi folks, we are planning a 4 week trip to France next June with our 4 kids under 7 years sailing into Roscoff. Is it necessary to book our sites in advance, we dont want to be tied to certain dates etc, would rather just see how it goes. Thought to book the first site and then perhaps find others through word of mouth.

Do other people do it this way or is everything booked in advance. We have only been caravanning for a year and it will be our first trip to France. Any advice greatly appreciated.

We went to France this year starting on May 1st and the sites in France were very quiet to the point that on one there was only us there. The general thought is that at this time of the year you will not need to book ahead but would need to in July and August. It might be worth you looking at the Camping Cheques sites as at the quieter times of year you can often pay only E10 per night.
 
You will have no problems in June Brenda, we never book weeks or months ahead. We just choose the next area and give the sites a call, I can't remember the last time we had a problem getting a pitch even in the height of the summer in France. If you are flexible you should not be dissapointed. If you call sites around late morning even when full they have people moving on and you can get a pitch booked for that day much of the time.

We have two young children, 3 and 7, and always go away at Whitsun, tagging one further week on. We had a 3 weeker last year and travelled from Santander up the coast of France to Cherbourg. Most sites were only one third full. We usually book a ferry with Caravan Club together with 7 or more camping cheques (so that we get the special ITX fare) and then plan the areas we would like to travel through, picking a few sites in the same area either in the Caravan Club Travel Service Book, Les Castels, Camping Cheques book etc so that if we do not like one we can move on to another but still explore the same area. We have never found a site in France full at this time of year.
