I’ve always used Michelin with various scales for longer distances then larger scale fir the locality where we are visiting. Don’t know what you mean by “ free”. Are you looking for old road maps from somewhere? Not a good idea as road numbers change as do routings. For free I use Google Maps or Via Michelin’s website.

Wait until shortly before you go and buy the latest edition of the Michelin Road Atlas of France - for in-car use the spiral bound version is the best. There is immense detail in it.

The Michelin Atlas of Europe is also very good but nothing like the scale and detail.

When you get to a destination go to the local Tourist Info office and they will often give you a map of the area - especially if you are interested in the Vide Greniers (equiv of our car boot sales but much nicer.)

I stand to be corrected, but IME of 'Big Road Atlses' they are just smaller atlases just printed bigger - certainly the case of the AA atlas of that name.
The Michelin atlas conversely provides much more detail as it is a true larger-scale item.
I should have put a photo of this AA Big Road Atlas France 2020

Michelin maps etc. used to be available in UK from their outlet in Watford with big discounts for caravan club members ( including free postage) You needed to give them a code word which used to be CC followed by the last two digits of the year. I have not tried this sincethe change to CAMC but there may be details on their website.
Michelin are sometimes a bit slow to update their on-line maps even when the changes affect major roads and/or those with major roadworks. I've known a six month delay in thee past.

Hello
You can use IPHIGENIE avalaible on Playstore. It is the product of the French national geographic institute.
You can display from main roads to the limits of each ownership property.
The first month is free, and then 15 euros/ year.

Sadly I think it's for Android only. I must check.

Hello. I think there are such cards. In any case, there should be applications that show a map of the desired city. When I was traveling in Germany, I had a problem with the train schedule. Every time I came to the city, I had to take pictures of the schedule or go to the website and watch when the train leaves. It was terribly inconvenient and at one of these moments, when I went to the website of the railway station, I came across a website that had information on train schedules throughout Germany. db auskunft helped me and I always managed to catch all the trains on time.

Back on subject. Be aware that camera detectors including Satnavs with fixed camera databases are illegal in France. Dashcams are legal but footage should not be uploaded.

However they can warn of an area where there may be a camera. I think that even in France they would require a warranty to access your private information on a satnav as that contains your data.

I doubt that they would find it that difficult to obtain one. If a “ crime” is suspected they could seize the unit. Apart from location information how is dash cam footage impinging on your data?

It contains personal data and also our own POIs and a record of our recent destinations. I can understand if a crime has been committed, but traffic offence? The EU had Data protection laws. However best is to stay within the law and obey the speed limit.
