Recently there have been a number of comments in posts designed to wind up other users. This has resulted in threads that have degenerated into arguments and personal attack. This is unacceptable and we have two options to sort this.

1, Delete the complete message, or whole thread

2, Edit the message and remove antagonistic comments

Option 1 will remove a lot of good feedback and discussion so we have decided to go with the second option.

If your comments get edited and you find this unacceptable please let us know and we will delete the message completely. Better still, avoid comments that are designed to wind other up.

This will be tried for a short while and if it is too much trouble or proves too problematic we will have to resort to the first option.

As for what is antagonistic and what is not? We have no choice but to let the moderators decide this. Please understand that when you post.

That seems very fair comment Mod 1.

I guess we all tow caravans and that should mean we have cars that are up to that task.

Comparing cars is one thing, but posting constant Anti 4 x 4 comment at every opportunity helps no one along with the fact that little of the comment is correct.

I think many here either ignore threads they do not have an interest in or if they spend time to place a valid comment they find it most annoying for the Anti Puritans getting the whole thread removed.

So Please Edit.

I quite agree - well said. I certainly ignore threads where I have no interest and do not comment unless feel I can genuinely add to the discussion.

Hi Mod,

Most of us are fed up with the so called informed comment which as you say degenerates into a wind up and is often anal and irelavent stuff on a topic, which at the end of the day, is supposed to be about towcar recommendations!

Rather than deleting or editing, as option 3, why not transfer the tread to general if it is obviously going astray in this manner.

That way folk who log on for advice on towcars will not have to wade through the swamp of purile nonsense that has become the norm recently

An old rule on the forum is that 4x4 discussions only happen in towcars. If they are outside of that forum they will be deleted.

Also, the admin functions on this forum do not allow the moving of threads

Point taken Mod, perhaps though, it being the season of goodwill, the offenders will see the damage they are doing by parading their agendas and getting personal and just give us all a break. We can live in hope.

Theres a better way than closing their membership, just ignore the posts that are blatantly obvious to most, made to get people wound up. Unfortunately lifes not that simple and some can't help themselves and have to respond. Why? Because they enjoy it. The problems come later when it gets to namecalling or the responder finds that they are getting the worse end of the stick and then go bleating to His Moddyship crying foul. It's very easy to ignore with practice, I speak from experience hehheh! ;O)

There is a third way Mod 1 - (there's always a third way) - de-register the serial winder-uppers!
A really good option. I sometimes wonder why it doesn't happen more often.

It certainly seems to come from a regular 'hardcore' of posters in my view

The general tenor of the messages so far seems to be that all the 'winding-up' in the 4x4 debate is coming from some mysterious 'anti' faction. Yet as far as I can see, most of the insults and offensive comments seem to emanate from those who feel personally threatened by even the mildest suggestion that 4x4s may not be the greatest invention ever. I see no reason for personal abuse to form part of any argument, on any topic, and would be happy to see it deleted - the sooner, the better.

I doubt that anyone thinks that 4 x 4's are the perfect car any more than a 4 metre caravan is better than a 7 metre one Chrissie.

The perfect car does not exist and never will any more than the perfect caravan.

Very few people in my experience part with their car budget cash without giving a good bit of thought to what they buy.

There is a lot of talk here about fixed bed caravans that we are not interested in any more than we are large washrooms.

When starting out caravanning, one needs to look at more than one perspective based on who is to use the van and how you envisage using it.

Surely that should be respected with choice of car!

Spot on Chrissie - and some seem to feel more threatened than others!!

Euro, fixed bed or end washrooms doesn't draw the same amount of venom as the 4x4 debate does or never will, at least not until the couple of 4x4 owners stop taking the bait that's dangled before them. Until these people learn to ignore or even choose to ignore (which I don't believe they do) 4x4 threads will always be contentious. Probably the only other topic that comes anywhere near it is the "Adults Only Sites" threads and that's only because a few people think that others are personally attacking their children.

What about the dog owners subject, L.B? Perhaps not so much venom involved, but it can drag on for some time.

I suppose it beats talking about the weather though, unless it's weather created by those 4x4s.......
