Portable air conditioning unit

You kinda have to decide between a proper airconditioning unit and an air cooler. The first has a compressor and is a heavy piece of kit. It also requires a hefty amperage. Very nice in the hot weather, but to carry one in a caravan I would suggest is not practical.

Many people have used air coolers which often use cold water to provide the cooling. They are much lighter and take less power. Obviously they are not as efficient but can be a good compromise. Or you can be like many of us, open all the windows, get a good fan, and sweat. Actually, usually by early morning it has cooled sufficiently to be fine.

Unless you have a pantechnicon as a towing vehicle i would suggest that airconditioners, even the very smallest may be a load too much. If you have a motorhome however, then the option is very much more a practical issue.

In recent years we have taken a portable A/C unit with us to the South of France, they are very heavy and we were able to fit it safely into our Caravan. When it worked whilst on site it was very nice if you were sitting in fron tof it ! HHowever it meant having all the windows closed to retain the cooler air but you have to leave one ajar to dangle the hose out of.

The DOWNSIDE was that the site we were on did provide sufficient electrical power (amps) but with so many people using it, there was a drop in the current and it caused the unit to work only as a big heavy fan. It really made me think it wasn't worth all the effort and cost of transporting it down there.

On balance, ordinary fans are probably best because of the weight factor and, they are constant. Best to cool off in the pool or have a nice cold drink and enjoy the sunshine.

Thanks for your comments, the reason we are looking at air conditioning units, our 8 year old labrador who will need to rest some days whilst we go climbing in the lake district. A glass of wine may not be appreciated!
